Breakout

Grid Map

Breakout is set on a rocky and snowy mountainside, with a secure facility armed with powerful anti-aircraft turrets and radar equipment.

Breakout’s three main routes are an outer wallrunning path on the edge of the cliff, a cover heavy central lane, and a narrow rear path with limited cover.

Note that while the central lane has a lot of cover, once you’re actually inside the building area in the middle of the map, the line of sight across the center from either edge is relatively open—beware of snipers and marksmen!

There’s a mix of smaller buildings around the edges of the map, but with the exception of the central structure, most are both small and have little or no cover inside. Have a CQC weapon ready if you enter them, or avoid them entirely.

Range

We spend a lot of time charting out effective weapon ranges in the Arsenal chapter, and all of the maps are gridded so you can see distances from point to point and area to area. It seems obvious, but it’s extremely important that you understand how effective your chosen weapon is at any given range.

The basic principles are clear. The weapons go from shotguns to SMGs to ARs to LMGs to snipers from closest to longest range. Pistols are also very short range weapons, and while they generally won’t win a fight against an ambushing pump action shotgun, they still give you a chance against shotguns and SMGs, and often an edge against longer range weaponry.

Most equipment (and launchers) are effective out to medium range at most. Some offensive scorestreaks can strike effectively anywhere on a map, but you can’t rely on always having access to them.

The rule of thumb is simple: Stick to the range that your weapon is most effective. As long as you keep this thought in mind, it should influence how you look at the maps as you play them. What maps have good sight lines for covering medium range or longer? Where are there lots of blind corners and hard cover that you can use to get in to CQC with short range weapons? What areas have many routes in and out that are dangerous to move through or fight in for long?

Think about the most extreme examples, where you use a sniper and do nothing but fight inside buildings, or the opposite and try to cover a long range outdoor lane with an SMG—or a shotgun! It seems incredibly obvious, but you can score a surprisingly high number of kills against players who challenge you with an SMG at mid to long range while you’re scoped in with a sighted AR or LMG.

Likewise, sprinting around the map at full speed with a long range weapon out isn’t a great idea. There’s no magic trick here. All you need to do to take advantage of effective range is to be aware of it, and maximize the number of encounters that take place on your terms at your favored distance.
