In addition to gear, Link also uses a variety of special items to aid him in his quest. All of the following items are stored on the Items subscreen, and the fact that Link must equip these items manually before he can use them makes them unique. Most of these items are not lost when you reset time. Only their ammo (such as arrows for the Hero’s Bow) or the contents of the item (such as any liquid or potion that you’re keeping in an Empty Bottle) will be lost.
Bombchu
Modeled after the Real Bombchus that plague Termina Field and Ikana Road, a Bombchu is a wind-up bomb that travels a short distance before it goes boom. Though fun, Bombchus are completely optional items that Link never needs to buy in order to complete his quest. However, if you like, you can buy Bombchus at the Trading Post in West Clock Town.
Bombs
Once Link buys a Bomb Bag, he’s able to carry up to 20 bombs. Equip bombs, and then use one to make Link pull one out. A bomb’s fuse lights the moment that Link pulls it out, so either set it down and flee, or throw it at a nearby target. Bombs are useful for defeating powerful enemies, and they can also blast through cracked walls, exposing secret passages and treasures. You can buy bombs at the Bomb Shop in West Clock Town, but you can also find them for free just by smashing jars and chopping up tall grass.
Deku Nut
These hard-shelled nuts emit a blinding flash on impact, stunning nearby enemies for a brief time. Toss Deku Nuts at foes to stun them before taking to the fray with Link’s blade. Deku Link can also drop Deku Nuts on foes after he launches up from a Deku Flower—just press
to make him drop a Deku Nut as he glides through the air. You can buy Deku Nuts at the Trading Post in West Clock Town. They also are commonly found when Link defeats Deku Babas and Mini Babas.
Deku Stick
Deku Sticks are long, thin sticks of wood that burn well. Whip out a Deku Stick and touch its end to a torch’s flame to light it. Deku Sticks don’t last long once they’re lit, so hurry and use it to set something else ablaze, or swing Link’s sword to stash the Deku Stick and keep it from burning up. You can buy Deku Sticks at the Trading Post in West Clock Town. They also are commonly dropped by Deku Babas after Link defeats them.
Empty Bottles
Bottles are invaluable items that let Link carry fluids, potions, and other items around with him. The original Majora’s Mask had only six Empty Bottles, but there’s a seventh one to find in Majora’s Mask 3D. Furthermore, you now find some of the bottles in different ways. Here’s where to find all seven Empty Bottles:
Empty Bottle #1: Kotake gives this to Link after he discovers her wounded sister, Koume, lying in the Woods of Mystery. It comes filled with Red Potion.
Empty Bottle #2: After you cleanse the swamp, you can win it from Koume’s Boat Tour game by shooting 20 or more targets.
Empty Bottle #3: Romani gives this to Link after he saves her ranch from “them.” It comes filled with milk.
Empty Bottle #4: Win it from the Goron Racetrack after you thaw out the mountain. It comes filled with Gold Dust.
Empty Bottle #5: Win it from the Beaver Brothers by beating them both in a pair of races around the Waterfall Rapids.
Empty Bottle #6: The Gorman Brothers give this to Link
after Link tells them of their sickly brother, the troupe leader. It comes filled with Mystery Milk.
Empty Bottle #7: Madame Aroma gives this to Link in the Latte Milk Bar after he hand-delivers her the Special Delivery to Mama.
Fire Arrow
During his explorations of Snowhead Temple, Link discovers the Fire Arrow, which lets him power his arrows with magical fire. You can use Fire Arrows to melt ice, light torches, and set enemies ablaze. Each Fire Arrow you shoot uses up some of Link’s magic power, so use regular arrows to conserve magic power whenever possible.
Great Fairy’s Sword
Bestowed to Link after he restores the Great Fairy of Kindness, the Great Fairy’s Sword is the largest and most powerful blade in the game. There’s a catch, however: this sword is so big and heavy that Link must equip it and wield it like an item. The Great Fairy’s Sword doesn’t replace Link’s standard
blade, and Link can’t wield it with the same grace and mastery that he does his primary sword. Still, it’s great to have.
Hero’s Bow
Found in the depths of Woodfall Temple, the Hero’s Bow gives Link a means of dealing with distant threats. Equip this excellent item to
or
so that you can use
or
to snap off fast shots. You can use the Hero’s Bow to defeat enemies or trigger remote switches.
-Target Link’s enemies for effortless aiming, then fill them full of arrows. Cut tall grass and break jars to find more arrows, and try to always keep a supply on hand.
Hookshot
Discovered deep within the Pirates’ Fortress, the Hookshot is an invaluable adventuring tool. Depending on the target, firing the Hookshot either brings Link to the target (if it’s heavy), or grabs the target and brings it back to Link (if it’s light). Creative use of the Hookshot lets Link reach otherwise inaccessible locations, so try targeting anchor stones and treasure chests that you see around Termina. You can also use the Hookshot to defeat weak enemies and stun larger foes. Equip it to
or
so you can whip it out at a moment’s notice.
Ice Arrow
Hidden in the Great Bay Temple’s watery confines, the Ice Arrow powers up the Hero’s Bow with frosty magic. Use Ice Arrows to create temporary ice platforms on water wherever you see telltale sparkles near the surface. You can also use Ice Arrows to freeze enemies solid, turning them into blocks of ice that can be grabbed, moved, and positioned to help Link reach higher vantages, just like stone blocks.
Lens of Truth
Guided by the wisdom of the great owl, Link finds his way to this magical artifact, which is kept safe in a lofty cave near Goron Village. As its name implies, the Lens of Truth lets Links see the truth (that is, invisible objects). Use the Lens of Truth to discover false walls, secret alcoves, invisible chests and enemies, and more. Gazing through the Lens of Truth expends magic power, so use it sparingly.
Light Arrow
Obtained within the bewildering Stone Tower Temple, the Light Arrow supercharges Link’s arrows with magical light. These ultimate arrows inflict great damage against enemies, and they are vital to solving the Stone Tower Temple’s many puzzles. For example, shooting special red emblems with Light Arrows causes the environment to turn upside-down, letting Link explore both the ceiling and the floor. Light Arrows can also activate sun emblems and banish sun blocks, just like the Mirror Shield. Due to their might, Light Arrows consume a significant amount of magic power with each use.
Magic Beans
When planted in soft soil and properly watered, these mysterious beans sprout into leaf platforms that Link can ride to reach special places. You can buy Magic Beans from the bean salesman beneath Deku Palace, or from the Business Scrub near the Swamp Tourist Center (speak to him as Deku Link). They cost just 10 Rupees apiece. Scoop some Spring Water into an Empty Bottle, and you can water your Magic Beans at any time. You can also water them by playing the Song of Storms (if you know the song).
Powder Keg
After Link purifies Snowhead Temple, the mountain thaws, and Link can perform a special feat. Go to Goron Village’s north end, and visit the Goron Powder Keg Shop. Talk to the Goron inside the shop as Goron Link, and he’ll test your ability to handle Powder Kegs. Carry the Powder Keg that the Goron gives you all the way to the Goron Racetrack, and use it to destroy the big boulder that’s blocking the racetrack. If you succeed, you’ll be able to buy more Powder Kegs at the Powder Keg Shop for 100 Rupees. However, the better deal is in Clock Town’s Bomb Shop, where Powder Kegs cost just 50 Rupees. Buy and use Powder Kegs to obliterate similarly huge boulders, like the one on Milk Road that’s blocking off Romani’s Ranch during the First and Second Days. Powder Kegs are so big that Link can only carry one at a time.
