Wrecked Ship

The Wrecked Ship is an ancient Chozo starship that crashed in a large lake within Crateria. Some of the Chozo astronauts survived, and became the founders of the Chozo civilization on Zebes. Samus must restore power to the ship by defeating the creature draining its energy, Phantoon. Upon doing so, areas of the partially sunken vessel become flooded.

Featured Boss: Phantoon

Phantoon is a leech-like specter feeding off not only the raw energy of the Wrecked Ship, but also the powerful brain waves of Mother Brain, which she employs to control the lifeforms of Zebes. The Cthulhu-inspired Phantoon, perhaps more than any other aspect of the Metroid series, has been described in various conflicting manners. The English instruction manual for Super Metroid explains that Phantoon is the living ghost of the Wrecked Ship itself, while the Japanese manual designates its origin as the physical manifestation of Mother Brain’s malevolent consciousness. Concept art for Metroid: Other M further states that Phantoon is a multidimensional cosmic entity that stowed away on the Chozo vessel which eventually became the Wrecked Ship, possibly even causing its initial crash-landing. Phantoon is also the final boss of Metroid: Other M, though there’s no explanation for its reappearance after its defeat in Super Metroid.

Phantoon is infamous for having ended several speedruns during high-profile livestream events due to routes that often pit Samus against the boss with very low health. It has several random attack and movement patterns, and its sole weak point, its eye, is not vulnerable when the boss is intangible.
