“It is truly not only my passion; it’s my work and my lifestyle too.”
“I’ve been professionally creating art, designs, and taking classes for almost 11 years, since I was only 17 years old,” began Gnomo del Bosque. “It is truly not only my passion; it’s my work and my lifestyle too.”
Entertainment of all sorts has fueled del Bosque’s desire to create, but video games—and very specifically Nintendo titles—provide endless encouragement. She draws from a well of childhood memories when creating. “I’m inspired by love, by respect, by epicness, by fear, by happiness, and also by all the feelings that we get when we are little, but we have to hide a bit when we are adults. I embrace nostalgia, and make it my own to translate it to pure childhood in my concepts.” For her Mario Bros. tribute, she recalls an extreme sense of adventure mixed with fear, inspired from her encounter with Bowser.
A lack of passion is a non-starter for her work. “Whenever I’m doing a new illustration, I need to love the game and characters, and be inspired by them or their story. If I don’t know them or love them, I don’t draw them,” stated del Bosque. A series of sketches come next, before honing in on a specific draft, establishing the light, color palette, and completing the piece with some post-production.
While there may be common emotional threads in her work, “Every piece is unique,” continued del Bosque. “I mix brush strokes with colorful and unique palettes together. I put western and eastern graphic styles on every work—the best of both worlds. And that’s what I love to do, mix worlds.”
