“At the time I was going through a phase of painting realistically lit cartoon and video game characters, and after looking at some photos of sunrises and sunsets, the idea of recreating a scene from Super Mario World popped into my head. I thought lighting the scene from behind using a sunrise would be quite nice and I could see it quite clearly in my mind.”
