Samus Aran was a native of an Earth colony before being orphaned by a Space Pirate raid. She was adopted by the wise and mysterious Chozo, an ancient and technologically advanced alien race. Infused with Chozo DNA and raised on the planet Zebes to become a warrior, Samus eventually became a renowned galactic bounty hunter.
Her cybernetic Power Suit armor was designed by the Chozo, and can be upgraded by assimilating ancient Chozo artifacts. Although it’s not shown in Super Metroid, the Power Suit is not removed like a traditional suit of armor, but rather, Samus can dematerialize and summon it from within herself at will. This requires unfathomable concentration and mental energy, made possible only by a lifetime of Chozo training.
Power Suit
A large part of the series’ appeal is the constant search for and discovery of new upgrades. Whether it’s increasing missile ammo or energy tanks, or finding entirely new weapons and power-ups, Super Metroid offers tons of toys to keep gameplay fresh.
Beams
Samus obtains a large variety of Beam types in Super Metroid. Furthermore, Beams can be combined in a number of ways for unique effects.
In order to further utilize Power Bombs, which generally have limited use within the game, special charge beam combos can be discovered with some experimentation. By combining the Charge Beam with the Ice Beam, Wave Beam, Spazer Beam, or Plasma Beam, one of four unique effects occurs.
Other Returning Aspects
The Morph Ball was one of the standout aspects of the original Metroid. It returns, along with the Screw Attack which provides a destructive element to Samus’ jumping capabilities.
Boots
Samus’ mobility options are drastically expanded upon in Super Metroid. Each one of her Boot upgrades is a literal game-changer, allowing players to reach new heights or quickly blast through areas in intended—and unintended—ways.
