“My general inspiration is landscape painters from the 17th and 18th centuries.”
French fan Orioto has been creating art for 15 years, and a quick glimpse of his portfolio gives ample evidence as to why he is one of the most prolific in the Nintendo community. His work pays homage to iconic Super NES moments, re-imagined in his whimsical style. “My general inspiration is landscape painters from the 17th and 18th centuries,” explained Orioto, “Like the work of Ivan Aivazovsky or Frederic Edwin Church.”
“Nintendo games were my youth really, and it was an interesting challenge to re-imagine them and bring new life to those memories,” he continued. “I started with dynamic compositions showing action from a character, then I switched to a more contemplative style with passive scenery where the landscape is the focus.”
“‘Sweet Jungle’ is one of my favorites because I find that scene so sweet and surreal,” described Orioto, detailing some of his choice works. “It was interesting to play with colors on this one and to find an organic style.”
“‘Toxic Planet’ was really fun to do because I wanted to find the link between Metroid and Nausicaa from Miyazaki. For ‘Forêt en fleur’ I tried to capture an impressionist look, from painters like Monet,” concluded Orioto.
