Playing With Super Power: Nintendo Super NES Classics Guide › Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

World 2

Bosses

Bigger Boo

This battle subverts the classic Boo encounters. Normally, looking at a Boo is a good thing, as it turns them intangible and allows the player to pass by safely. However, Yoshi can’t hit Bigger Boo when the ghost is in this state, so Eggs need to be ricocheted off the walls while Yoshi is facing away from this boss in order to cause damage. Pretty cool!

Roger the Potted Ghost

Roger’s pot must be pushed off a platform while two Shy Guys push from the other side, slowing Yoshi’s efforts. Just try not to think too much about a world where giant ghosts could grow out of decorative flower pots.

Featured Stage: 2-6: Cave of the Mystery Maze

World 3

Bosses

Prince Froggy

Normally Kamek enlarges the boss, but this time he shrinks Yoshi, who is subsequently swallowed by Prince Froggy. Yoshi must then attack the frog’s uvula while avoiding stomach acid and now-giant Shy Guys swallowed by the Prince. This reversal of fortune also provides a terrifying look at the fate millions of Yoshi’s enemies have suffered!

Naval Piranha

Yoshi could fight this battle as it was intended, or, if quick enough, can end the confrontation with a single Egg before it even starts! If the Piranha Plant takes damage from off-screen before Kamek arrives, he never has the chance to use his magic on her!

Featured Stage: 3-3: Nep-Enut’s Domain

Shy Guys

Vertical level design wasn’t the only thing Yoshi’s Island inherited from Super Mario Bros. 2. The masked Shy Guys made their triumphant return, replacing the emblematic Koopa Troopas for a welcome change of pace. Like Koopa Troopas, Shy Guys now came in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
