Legacy

Nintendo’s 16-bit hardware saw worldwide sales in excess of 49M units, with nearly half of those for the Super NES and approximately 17M for the Super Famicom. It was the best-selling console of the era, and came remarkably close to the NES’s record of 61M units sold.

The Super NES lived on, in a way, through Nintendo’s successor to the Game Boy handheld device, the Game Boy Advance. Released in 2001 and sharing many of the same hardware capabilities as its console kin, the Game Boy Advance became home to numerous Super NES-style sequels (Metroid Fusion, F-Zero Climax) and enhanced ports of Super NES games (Super Mario World 1 and 2, Donkey Kong Country 1 through 3).

The Super NES Classic Edition was released in 2017. This miniature version of the console came pre-loaded with 21 iconic games, and allowed the 16-bit behemoth to add one final game to its 26-year legacy: Star Fox 2.
