Items
In addition to a primary and secondary weapon, each Ghost can also carry two items, including a variety of grenades as well as Sensors. Select your items carefully, based on the objectives and area of operations. If civilians are present, think twice about bringing along lethal devices like Frag grenades.
EMP Grenade
- Description: Disables equipment and disrupts HUD of any caught in blast.
- Quantity: 3
- Unlock: Complete Tiger Dust mission.
Field Notes
These grenades emit an electromagnetic pulse, capable of disabling electronic equipment and vehicles. They’re most effective against Bodark spec op units, causing their Optical Camo to malfunction. This makes the enemies much easier to see and target. But the EMP effect won’t last long, so neutralize the Bodark units before they recover. EMP grenades can also fry the electronics in automated turrets, rendering them harmless.
Flashbang
- Description: Nonlethal explosive that blinds and disorients anyone in the blast.
- Quantity: 4
- Unlock: Complete Noble Tempest.
Field Notes
These nonlethal tactical aids are best deployed in areas where hostiles are operating in close proximity to civilians or hostages. Upon detonation, the device emits a loud sound and bright flash, temporarily blinding and deafening anyone within its blast radius. Affected targets usually rub their eyes and stumble about for a few seconds before eventually recovering.
Frag Grenade
- Description: High-explosive grenade intended to kill or wound.
- Quantity: 3
- Unlock: Complete Campaign Prologue.
Field Notes
This is a standard-issue high-explosive fragmentation grenade that is effective against personnel as well as light vehicles. Exercise extreme caution when throwing these grenades to ensure that they don’t land near teammates or bounce back toward you. Each grenade has five-second fuse, and you can bank them off walls and around corners. While they’re most effective against infantry, in a pinch, they can also be deployed to take out vehicles like the GAZ-66 truck or GAZ-2330 light vehicle.
Incendiary Grenade
- Description: Sets fire to an area, injuring any who attempt to pass through.
- Quantity: 3
- Unlock: Complete Silent Talon mission.
Field Notes
Incendiary grenades are useful during a variety of offensive and defensive situations where you want to limit enemy movement. During firefights, consider deploying these on your flanks to prevent enemy troops from flanking your team. These grenades are also very effective against enemies equipped with ballistic shields. Simply toss a grenade in their path and watch them burn as they step into the fire.
Sensor
- Description: Detects nearby enemies, highlighting them on the HUD.
- Quantity: 5
- Unlock: Complete Campaign Prologue.
Field Notes
Sensors can detect all enemy contacts within a large radius. The data is automatically relayed to each soldier’s HUD through the use of augmented reality. This allows each member of the Ghosts to see all detected threats, even if they’re hidden behind cover or within buildings. Threats outside a soldier’s line of sight are shown as a silhouette on the HUD. Enemies outlined in yellow are unaware of the Ghosts presence and will not attack. However, enemies outlined in red are on alert and will return fire. By aiming at a contact, you can also see what kind of weapon they’re carrying, which is ideal for threat assessment. Make a habit of targeting enemies with sniper rifles, RPGs, or light machine guns (LMGs) first as they pose the biggest threat to your team. Sensors only detect enemies for a limited time, so deploy fresh Sensors as necessary to keep informed of enemy movements. Sensors will not detect Bodark spec ops units unless they have been affected by an EMP grenade.
Smoke Grenade
- Description: Creates a smokescreen, providing concealment.
- Quantity: 4
- Unlock: Complete Deep Fire mission.
Field Notes
These grenades emit a thick cloud of gray smoke that is ideal for covering advances or defensive positions. The Ghosts (and Bodark spec ops units) have the ability to see through smoke by activating their Magnetic view or Night Vision Goggles (NVGs). As a result, deploying smoke can give them significant a tactical advantage that allows them to engage while their targets are blind. Smoke from these grenades dissipates after a few seconds, so continue tossing smoke grenades to keep an area obscured.
Mounted Machine Guns
Throughout the course of the campaign you’ll encounter several mounted machine guns that can be used to give your team a serious boost in firepower. But go easy on the trigger to prevent overheating. Make sure teammates watch your back while you’re manning one of these weapons—if you’re not careful, you may get flanked by enemy troops. Some machine guns are fitted with a protective steel plate that helps absorb incoming fire. But if the weapon doesn’t have a steel plate, you’re extremely vulnerable standing in one spot with no effective cover. In some cases, mounted machine guns are the only way to destroy vehicles such as Mi-24 attack helicopters and BTR-90 Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs).
