Being from a proud bloodline of the Tevinter Imperium has its advantages: Dorian was born with a flair for magic that made him the envy of his peers. He is charming and confident, his wit as sharp as any blade, and if some suggest his manner cocky, it could be attributed to being a powerful mage in a land where mages rule. Indeed, Dorian would be the pride of his family—if he didn’t oppose everything his homeland has come to stand for. He wears the labels of “pariah” and “outcast” proudly, knowing that views of the Imperium are unlikely to change until and unless someone of his ability stands up to make a difference.
Specialization
Necromancer: Dorian is well-versed in spells that bind and manipulate Fade spirits, a practice that does not have the same stigma in the Tevinter Imperium as it does elsewhere in Thedas.
First Encounter
Your first encounter with Dorian differs based on whether you chose to ally with the rebel mages or templars. If you chose In Hushed Whispers, Dorian is first encountered inside Redcliffe village’s chantry after you’ve met Alexius. Here Dorian informs you of Alexius’s devious plan and offers to help stop him. After your time-bending adventure through Redcliffe Castle, Dorian offers to stay and help the Inquisition. If you chose to pursue the templars in Champions of the Just, Dorian isn’t encountered until you return to Haven after defeating the envy demon in Therinfal Redoubt. Dorian is the one who arrives at Haven’s main gate to warn you of Corypheus’s attack. Later, at Skyhold, you can speak to Dorian in the library and ask him to join the Inquisition.
Approval
Dorian is the ultimate rebel and nonconformist. He has embraced his “deviant” status by leaving home and actively working to reform the Imperium, even if that means he must do it from outside. Dorian approves of witty retorts and clever decision-making—especially when these decisions support mages and his efforts to reform Tevinter. While critical of the Imperium himself, Dorian takes exception when others disparage Tevinter. Blunt and aggressive responses also annoy him. Having seen firsthand what became of his mentor, Alexius, Dorian is wary of blood magic and any other forbidden uses of magic.
Approval Gained
- Ally with the rebel mages at Redcliffe.
- Say “Corypheus must be stopped” when made Inquisitor.
- Allow the Grey Wardens to join the Inquisition after securing Adamant.
- Gain enough court approval (85+) to have Florianne arrested at the Winter Palace.
- Reunite Celene and Briala at the Winter Palace.
- Allow Celene to be assassinated at the Winter Palace.
- Ally with Abelas at the Temple of Mythal.
- Defeat Calpernia without fighting at the Temple of Mythal.
- Allow Morrigan to drink from the Well of Sorrows at the Temple of Mythal (major approval if Dorian is in a romance with the Inquisitor)
Approval Lost
- Conscript the mages at Redcliffe.
- Disband or ally with the templars at Therinfal Redoubt.
- Make Alexius tranquil in his judgment.
- Say you’ll “do it for my own power” when made Inquisitor.
- Exile the Grey Wardens after securing Adamant.
- Kill Ponchard during Dorian’s romance gift plot.
- Choose Gaspard as the next emperor of Orlais.
- Refuse an alliance with Abelas at the Temple of Mythal.
- Drink from the Well of Sorrows at the Temple of Mythal (increased disapproval if Dorian is in a romance with the Inquisitor)
Romance
Dorian is a natural flirt in his conversations with women. But he maintains a respectful distance from men, fully aware that not every man will reciprocate his interest. However, if playing as a male Inquisitor you can fire back with your own flirts to indicate you’re interested in being more than just friends.
The romance doesn’t officially begin until after you’ve completed Dorian’s personal plot, Last Resort of Good Men. Indicate your intentions to Dorian at the end of this quest or during a conversation at Skyhold. Once the romance has begun, you receive a message from Leliana, initiating Dorian’s romance plot, The Magister’s Birthright. But be careful when completing this quest; killing Ponchard ends not only the quest but also your romance with Dorian.
If the romance is still active following The Magister’s Birthright, speak to Dorian in Skyhold. When Dorian suggests returning to your quarters, do so to culminate the romance. Your romance with Dorian is not popular with the Chantry, and Dorian feels you may be putting your personal interests ahead of the Inquisition’s. You can call off the relationship at any point.
