Even before demons started pouring from Fade rifts, southern Thedas had seen more than its fair share of turmoil and bloodshed. The mage rebellion has caused great instability in Ferelden, prompting refugees to flee their homes as they attempt to escape the war between the mages and templars. A civil war has been equally destructive in Orlais, as Empress Celene clings to power, challenged by her own cousin, Grand Duke Gaspard.
Now an unknown threat has torn a hole in the sky, allowing demons to cross over from the Fade. But instead of putting their differences aside and focusing on the Breach, a threat to the whole world, the warring parties are more concerned with winning their relatively petty conflicts. It is only the Inquisition who stands as a stabilizing force in southern Thedas, determined to close the Breach and restore order.
