Sunset Overdrive Official Strategy Guide Sunset City Essentials

Currencies and Collectibles

There are, naturally, many different things you can pick up. After all, this is a video game. Boxes and crates can be bashed open, revealing their contents. Red Murica Munitions boxes contain ammo, while green Fizzfresh+ medical boxes contain health. Blue Fizzboxes contain Cash. Boxes marked otherwise may contain health, Cash, and Overcharge. ATMs and newspaper dispensers can also be broken, spewing Cash. To build up Overcharge, smash vending machines. You’ll also find Cash and Overcharge around downed enemies, whether you killed them or whether they’re warring among themselves. OD drops are almost always Overcharge, while Scab drops are almost always Cash; Fizzco Bots drop both Cash and Overcharge. It’s worth noting that although you receive Cash and Overcharge many different ways, the primary way you’ll receive either is by completing Missions, Quests, and Challenges, and by going online with Chaos Squad.

Although the city is locked down, emergency aid can still come from above. Aid packages can be seen parachuting down when they are released, and are indicated by their blue color and the green signal smoke they emit. The minimap also displays nearby chests with a distinct icon. You’ll usually have to do a fair bit of climbing to snag the aid package, but it’s worth it, netting you a good amount of Cash and Overcharge. Clamber up to whichever rooftop the chest ends up on and claim the supplies.

Subtle brown pirate chests can also be found, this booty usually closer to ground level and tucked away into alleys and dark corners. You’ll find nice stashes of Cash and Overcharge inside.

Aside from Cash, Overcharge, health, and ammo, there are several other types of things you’ll surely go collecting on crazy lines throughout Sunset City.

Amp Currencies

While Cash buys outfits and Overcharge buys guns, these items are used as the raw ingredients in Floyd’s Amp creations. They’re also great encouragement to get comfortable covering higher ground. You’ll want to be comfortable performing feats of traversal derring-do to snag most of these.

While Floyd will certainly give you some Amps as a result of Mission success, most Amps are acquired either through collecting these Currencies (which you’ll then use to purchase Amps from Floyd) or by playing Chaos Squad multiplayer. For more on Amps, check out the Amps section of this guide.

Fizzie Balloons

Fizzie balloons are mostly found higher up, usually directly over a bounce pad or hovering out over a drop. A few Fizzie balloons are less obviously hidden, tucked away at ground level in an alley or pool. Balloons will test your comfort in the air: jumping, flip jumping from undergrind, bouncing/super bouncing/slam bouncing, and air dashing. They also tend to be the easiest collectible currency to track down, what with being balloons floating high up and all.

Toilet Paper

Injudicious youths have strewn Toilet Paper over bars all over the place. These can be collected by either pole swinging the bar they’re on, or simply passing extremely close to the TP (like falling through it). TP will often catch your eye from below as you grind up above, which allows you to jump off the rail you’re on, fall to the toilet-papered bar and pole swing back up to go back to grinding, with +1 added to your TP total and several moves added to an ongoing Style Combo.

Cameras

Along with blanketing the city in their products and branding, Fizzco is also engaging in widespread surveillance. This is a win-win: you get to smash Fizzco property, and Floyd needs the lenses. Most cameras are situated on rooftop corners, usually overlooking intersections or other points of interest, and you can either shoot them or grind right past them with a melee swipe; if they’re close enough to a rail, you may destroy cameras by simply grinding over them. Only a handful are in devious places, tucked away inside on lower floors of multi-level spaces, inside train stations, and under highways.

Shoes

Sunset City would seem to have a wildly disproportionate number of smelly Shoes draped over power lines, even for an apocalypse, but whatever: Floyd needs them. Shoes are most noteworthy for the aura of odor around them, and also because they’re dangling cherry-like from the middle of otherwise-unadorned undergrind lines. To collect Shoes, you’ll want to undergrind through them. As with Toilet Paper, you’ll often see Shoes from above, while grinding a higher path. Jump from above and fall down just to where the Shoes hang, then tap  to undergrind the line they’re on just as you collect them. From there, you can likely then just tap  then  to flip jump right back up to where you started!

Neon Signs

Neon Signs are about as easy to spot as Fizzie balloons, for obvious reasons. Collecting all the Neon Signs will test your mastery of wall running. You can also grab Neon Signs by falling or jumping or air dashing through them, but this isn’t totally consistent. To be sure, collide with the base of the Neon Sign while wall running. Wall climbing (alternating wall run and wall jump up the same wall face) gives you lots of flexibility and room for error in Neon Sign collection.

Collectibles

These items are worth finding for their own sake, and finding all of them will net some Achievements, but they do not have direct gameplay consequences.

Here is some noble vandalism, with 40 Fizzco signage spaces-for-lease for you to dominate with graffiti tags. Fight the power!

By collecting 40 smartphones, you’ll uncover details and events in Fizzco’s history (at least events they were willing to commit to text message), which led to Overcharge’s launch in its present, virtually-lethal state. Sadly, there are no candid selfies to peruse on these phones. Fizzco decision makers are evil, but not randy.

From 20 high points, you can survey the gorgeous skylines of Sunset City through binoculars, with snarky commentary provided by your hero. You can find the first one in a crow’s nest in the brewery where you first meet Floyd, and 19 more sets of binoculars are installed elswhere, waiting for you to peer through them, usually on high rooftops.

Finally, intrusion of privacy: use hackable satellite uplinks and a parabolic microphone to eavesdrop on 9 conversations around the city. It may not be entirely ethical, but perhaps digital snooping has taken a backseat to everything else gone wrong since Horror Night.
