Sunset Overdrive Official Strategy Guide Missions ACT 1

1-9: Max's Parents

Old Factory District

Max is the last of the Oxfords who needs convincing in order to help you restore Walter’s glider to working order. He’s worried about his parents, who live (or perhaps lived) in a luxurious double high-rise in northwest Little Tokyo, which is where you’ll have to go to check up on them. From Sasquatch and Friends, this is just north up the road before taking a right turn across the north bridge, basically the reverse of Boo-Boo’s journey home. At the Riviera twin towers, you’ll find that Scabs have secured the area and set up a camp at the base. First things first, clear out the Scabs at ground level around their makeshift camp.

Once you’ve cleared the base of the buildings of Scabs, you’ll find a harpoon set up, aimed toward the first level of balconies. Take control of the harpoon and fire it at a shiny point visible on the balcony. This will establish a grind-able line that lets you get up onto the balcony. You’ll have to rely on harpoons aimed at shiny contact points leading ever upward to ascend back-and-forth between these two towers, since the curved portions of the towers’ sides prevent you from climbing via the usual wall run/wall jump shenanigans.

Once you harpoon-grind up to the balcony level from which the Scabs have hung enormous black Scab flags, you may notice a rather noteworthy heckler circling the towers: the Fizzie mascot itself is here! To ascend on this level, you’ll have to ring the outer circumference of both buildings by grinding and pole swinging along green and yellow power wires, with nothing under you for support besides the clear blue sky. There are electric nodes in places along the power wires, so grind or undergrind where appropriate to avoid them. You’ll also have to leave the wire to jump to a pole swing bar or bounce-ready exhaust fan in places.

When you’ve circumnavigated the buildings’ exteriors on the power wires, you’ll arrive on a Scab-encrusted balcony on the west tower. Clear out the Shooters and then spy the new set of harpoons.

When you arrive on the roof of the east tower, you’ll be greeted by Scab Rushers, the elite melee unit of the looters. You’ll have to clear the eastern roof of Scabs to advance. You’ll mostly have to wade through several waves of Scab Rushers, but there will be a few Scab Shooters backing them up. Scab Rushers can be a problem if you stand around, but if you stay moving by bouncing off the old mattresses and grinding off the clotheslines and ledges up here (what are old mattresses doing up here?), they won’t be able to catch up. Apply weapons, and fire ammo liberally. Once the Scab Rushers are done for, you’ll be ready to grind the upward-angled wires to the west tower’s roof. Before you move on, be sure to peer through the binoculars found at the north tip of the east tower, one of the game’s few high point collectibles.

The west tower’s roof has yet more Scabs, though fewer than the east tower before it. Clear these Scabs out too (another mix of Rushers and Shooters), so you can finally check the penthouse apartment of Max’s parents. Once that’s done, you’ll clear the Mission by finding a recording at ground level before returning to Sasquatch and Friends in the Old Factory District.
