Downtown, Little Tokyo, Old Factory District
First things first, gear up for a straight-up robot throw-down. No Scabs, no mutants. Install Chance of Lightning or Grind the Lightning as your Epic Amp, group Murderang, Shocker, Fizzbot Rifle, and Charge Beam together on your weapon wheel, fill the rest of it with deployables, and get ready to dodge plasma. Meet up with Sam at the ruined overpass in the middle of Downtown to get started. Sam’s been hacking his heart out this entire mutant invasion, and he knows something big is brewing at Fizzco HQ. He needs to hack from on-site to find out what, though. But thankfully Esperanza and Las Catrinas have finally agreed to help, providing Sam a path to get into Fizzco HQ and get the crucial information. The gang’s all here—everyone is invested in taking the city back from the corporate machines, and the machines aren’t leaving the surviving humans much choice anyway. After kicking off here, everyone heads east to the Fizzco campus for the battle royal the whole city has anticipated.
On the campus grounds, your job is to distract Fizzco’s main forces by engaging wave after wave above ground. This occurs while Sam and Esperanza crawl through the sewers beneath, getting Sam where he needs to be to plug into Fizzco’s secrets. Everything you know about Sunset Overdrive combat should be on display here, and you’ll need to range over the campus space and check the minimap for red dots to dismantle every Fizzco Bot. As the battle progresses, you’ll be joined by other factions, with guest appearances by heroes like Bryllcream and King Ignatius. Continue battling Fizzco forces, Rifle and Blade and Bomb Bots, while receiving updates from Sam and Esperanza. If things weren’t serious enough, the fierce fighting on the campus grounds is capped off by the arrival of two Tank Bots simultaneously!
This might not actually be the first time you’ve seen two Tank Bots together, if you’ve spent a lot of time wandering around Downtown. It’s possible to run into two Tank Bots, or a Tank Bot and a Herker or Spawner, and so on, at the same time during odd patrols. Here, of course, the stakes are higher than a random patrol. Two Tank Bots can create a brutal crossfire with auto-lasers or rockets if they both focus attention on you. You can tip scales in your favor by deploying Taunt Bots and Turret Copters to distract the Bots and supplement your damage output. Place a couple of each, then switch to a direct damage weapon. Since Tank Bots are such big targets, you can consider doing things like firing Pulse or Proximity Mines directly at them.
Once both Fizzco Tank Bots are demolished, the campus will be more or less secured. There will be straggler Bots fighting for Fizzco, sure, but your allies have a good hold on the terrain. Meanwhile, it’s time for you to push forward to continue the search for HQ info. On the northeast side of the campus, allies have set up a harpoon launcher for you to quickly access a new path.
Sam, he of occasionally insane-sounding ideas, has suggested that the large, seemingly-promotional enormous bottle of Overcharge that happens to be pointed directly at Fizzco HQ is in fact an actual giant bottle of Overcharge, so it may provide a fast track into the building! Well, or so Sam suggests. Maybe. It’s just an idea. A harpoon on the northeast side of campus starts you on a rooftop path to the gigantic Overcharge bottle. You will run into Fizzco Bots along the way, as they’ll be constantly arriving in a last-ditch attempt to stop you, but you can simply speed past them toward giant bottle destiny.
The giant Overcharge bottle here can be shaken until it goes carbon-critical, with results you’ll have to see for yourself. Finally, Fizzco’s secret dawns on Sam and friends…
