Equipping Gear
As the Pale Rider defeats enemies, opens chests, and destroys clutter, he’ll regularly discover new weapons and pieces of gear that he can equip to enhance his combat prowess. Simply approach any bit of gear you discover and pick it up to add it to Death’s inventory. You can also choose to equip gear right away if you like, without having to call up the Chronicle. However, you may wish to visit the Chronicle and check the Inventory tab for a more detailed analysis of Death’s current gear.
Possessed Weapons
A handful of incredibly rare possessed weapons can be found within the realms. Immensely powerful in their own right, these special weapons can become even more deadly at the Reaper’s hand. By “feeding” unwanted gear to a possessed weapon, Death can boost its innate stats to greater and greater heights. In this manner, entirely new benefits can be added to such weapons.
Possessed weapons can give the Reaper a dramatic advantage in combat, so keep an eye out for them. It’s easy to tell when you’ve discovered a possessed weapon—their names always feature the prefix “possessed”. Once you’ve discovered a possessed weapon, work at increasing its power by feeding it other weapons. Simply select the possessed weapon in your inventory and choose the Upgrade option to begin feeding it other weapons.
Here are some things to keep in mind regarding possessed weapons:
- Each possessed weapon can be “leveled up” five times by filling its XP bar five times.
- When fed to a possesed weapon, high-level weapons will grant lots of XP; low level weapons will grant less XP.
- Each time a possessed weapon levels up, you may be able to upgrade it with new attributes that benefit Death. These attribute bonuses are determined by the weapons you choose to feed to the possessed weapon. For example, feeding a possessed weapon lots of weapons with the Health Regen attribute will increase your chances of bestowing the Health Regen attribute to the possessed weapon when it levels up. Keep this in mind when feeding your possessed weapons.
Special Items and Abilities
Death must utilize a number of special items over the course of his great quest. After discovering one of these items, equip it through the Skills Radial or by visiting the Chronicle.
Redemption
The first special item that Death acquires is his pistol, Redemption. This handy sidearm can be used to pick off smaller enemies and detonate remote Shadowbombs. Once Death acquires the Lure Stone as part of the “Sticks and Stones” side quest, he can also use Redemption to draw in the energy of Stonebites that are scattered around the realms. Redemption has a large clip of bullets and automatically reloads over time.
Deathgrip
The Deathgrip is a versatile tool that Death obtains near the end of his journeys in the Forge Lands. When used, the Deathgrip fires out a ghostly hand that grasps faraway objects. This allows Death to tractor in distant items and lighter enemies, or grapple and zip toward heavier objects and foes. Use the Deathgrip to snatch out-of-reach Shadowbombs, swing from hoops, stun lesser enemies, and quickly zip toward larger enemies after dodging their attacks.
Interdiction
For a short time during his travels through the Kingdom of the Dead, Death gains the use of a special power known as Interdiction. This ability enables the Horseman to summon and issue orders to the Dead Lords that he subjugates in service to the Lord of Bones.
After subjugating a Dead Lord, use Interdiction at any Summoning Circle to call the Dead Lord forth. Enter aiming mode afterward to target special environmental objects, such as levers and pressure plates, and then use Interdiction again to order the Dead Lord to trigger the object. This allows Death to progress through areas he otherwise couldn’t.
Soul Splitter
After Death completes a difficult task for the Lord of Bones, his Interdiction ability is replaced with the Soul Splitter ability. This power allows Death to split his soul into two mirror images, leaving his physical form behind. The Soul Splitter helps Death solve an array of mind-bending puzzles, and it lets him navigate areas he couldn’t normally traverse. Hold the Action button to switch between Death’s two souls as you use them to explore his surroundings in new ways. Don’t stray too far from Death’s physical form, however, or the Soul Splitter will deactivate and Death will revert back to his normal form.
Voidwalker
Near the end of the adventure, Death acquires a special tool that allows him to activate the blue warp portals found around the realms. Simply fire the Voidwalker at a warp portal to open it, and then look for another nearby portal to open. Pass through one open portal to emerge from the other. Only two portals can be open at any one time.
Phasewalker
The Phasewalker is an enhanced version of the Voidwalker. With this unique tool, Death can open green time portals in addition to blue warp portals. Simply fire the Phasewalker at a time portal, and then step through to travel between the present and the past. This comes into play primarily during Death’s journey through the demonic realm of Shadow’s Edge.
