Street Fighter V eGuide Fighters Vega

Overview

Pros
  • Vega is the only character who can link a low-hitting crouching into another normal attack for a low-check, medium-strength hit-confirm combo.
  • The fastest walk speed in the game makes him extremely agile, complementing both his offense and defense.
  • Versatility with Switching Claw allows him to play with an even stronger close-range game (with the addition of a powerful command throw).
  • He has a two-bar game-changing V-Gauge, enhancing his claw attacks greatly with V-Trigger cancels.
Cons
  • Vega does not have access to a truly invincible anti-air reversal, so he must rely on his V-Reversal to escape sticky situations.
  • He has limited durability on his mask and claw. Losing his mask causes him to take 10 percent more damage (as well as deal 10 percent more), while losing his claw permanently limits his mid-range pokes.
  • He can be difficult to play for newer players, particularly with regard to using Switching Claw appropriately.
  • His claw hitboxes don’t extend past his hurtboxes in most cases (Aurora Spin Edge and standing are the exceptions), so they’re not as dominating as they were in previous SF games.

The Scarlet Terror returns with a new look and moveset. Old moves like his wall dives, backflips, forward rolls, and claw swipes return, but they have new input motions and properties. With Vega, you can switch at will between fighting with the claw or holstering it to fight barehanded (where foes will have to watch out for barehanded Vega’s all-new command throw). While in large strokes this Vega isn’t radically different than previous incarnations—he’s fast and makes a great mid-range defensive pest—the extent to which this Vega can be successful as either an aggressive turtle or just an outright aggressor is unprecedented.

Your objective is to apply an overwhelming footsie game in mid and close range. Achieve this by:

  • Exploiting Vega’s mobility, especially walk speed, to get into your desired range
  • Fishing out whiffs from the opponent around max footsie range and punishing with standing or crouching sweep
  • Luring out badly timed anti-air attacks or instilling hesitation in the opponent with Flying Barcelona Wall Jump tricks
