Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Guide › N-Sanity Island

The Great Gate

Rewards: Clear Gem—break all 38 boxes (Yellow Gem required for eight of the boxes).

This level is a bit different from the previous two. Instead of moving down a path, you must climb up a large gate and move across elevated platforms without falling. There are some new challenges as well.

The gate blocks your path. Since you can’t go through it, go over it. Smash the boxes, then jump on the iron arrow box to bounce up. Press the Jump button as you hit the top of an iron arrow box to bounce higher. Bounce up to a pair of iron arrow boxes and use them to get to the next one. Finally, bounce up onto a wooden platform.

Don’t use the spin attack on the platform boxes, or you won’t be able to get the mask. Instead, jump onto them so you can jump up to get the Aku Aku box. Continue to the right and watch out for a turtle. Jump across to another platform, where you find a second turtle and a carnivorous plant. Keep going right. When you find a wooden box between two iron boxes, hit the wooden box to get the first Tawna icon, then time your jump to avoid the bouncing iron box. It if hits you, it deals damage or takes away a life.

As you head right, you run into your first monkey. Watch for it to drop into a ball and roll toward you. Jump over it and use a spin attack to defeat it once it stops moving and stands up. Keep going to the right until you can go no farther. There’s a small wooden platform in a vertical position. Jump up and hit it from below to rotate it horizontally. Jump on the platform to the right, then jump across to the rotatable platform to the left where an iron arrow box bounces you higher. The rotating platform only stays horizontal for a short time, so don’t delay. Continue bouncing up on iron arrow boxes until you reach the platform with the checkpoint box.

Head left. Jump on the back of a turtle to get to a high box you can’t otherwise reach. Eventually you come to some spiky poles—they either push up from below or drop from above. Before they move, they shake a bit, so use that as a warning. Getting through them is a matter of timing. After the first set of poles, smash some boxes to find the second Tawna icon.

Next, you face a tribesman. He can’t hurt you by touching you, but he can push you off the platform. As soon as you move onto a platform with him, he maneuvers toward you to push you with his shield. Jump over him, and he puts the shield over himself to prevent you from jumping on him. This is your chance to hit him with a spin attack from the side. As you continue to the left, you move along some slippery platforms. When you land on them, you slide down the slope. Move in the opposite direction to stop the slide.

Get past challenges until you come across more spiky poles. You also have to time jumping over flames that shoot up. Wait until a flame goes down, then jump over it. The third Tawna icon is in a box near the portal. Pick it up and enter the portal to grab some extra lives.

Tawna Bonus Stage

This bonus stage has 11 boxes to destroy. Remember, you don’t lose lives in these bonus stages and you can attempt them as many times as needed. Jump across to the right, then onto the lower box of Wumpa fruit. Bounce up and down to get all the Wumpa fruit before dropping onto the red TNT box. Quickly move to the right to avoid the explosion, then continue right. A few boxes make a bridge, so jump on each to smash it without falling. Continue to the end platform to score two more extra lives.

Finally, move to the left and avoid more spiky poles to reach the end of the level. After earning the Yellow Gem in a later level, you can access a secret area where you find the remaining boxes. For now, jump onto the portal to exit the level.

Yellow Gem Path

You need the Yellow Gem to access a secret area in this level. It can be earned in the Lab level near the end of the game. Once you have this gem, step onto the portal and let it lift you over the end portal to the rest of the Great Gate. Head up a vertical stage, then move right along a horizontal stage. Look for an arrow box. Adjust so you jump over the wall at a flat spot, bypassing several threats. Finally, traverse another vertical level with the last box and an exit portal. In order to break every box, use the back entrance and backtrack to break the arrow box.

Time Trial

Time Requirements

Sapphire: 1:05:00

Gold: 0:53:29

Platinum: 0:48:07

As with all time trials, the key is to keep moving. Have your spin attacks timed just right to quickly get enemies out of your way. The vertical stage can easily add extra seconds—practice to learn exactly where to jump so you land on the next arrow box. Finally, as you rush toward the end, make sure you can get over the tribesmen with a single attempt. If you keep moving, you can pass most of the spiky poles without stopping.
