Rewards: Clear Gem—destroy all 49 boxes.
This first level of the game gives you a chance to learn some of the moves and get used to the basic challenges and obstacles you face later on. Jump on the boxes of Wumpa fruit to start collecting them.
Collect 100 Wumpa fruit for an extra life. Don’t forget to smash the box with the “?”—sometimes these contain an extra life—then head from the beach into the jungle of Wumpa Island.
The first enemy you face is a crab. Defeat it by jumping on top of it or by hitting it with a spin attack, then jump over the chasm. Don’t fall in, or you lose one of your lives. On the other side of the chasm, break open the box to pick up the first Aku Aku Mask.
Continue down the path until you come across a box with an arrow pointing up. Don’t spin-attack it; you can bounce on these boxes. Jump onto it and bounce up to hit a higher box filled with Wumpa fruit. Keep bouncing until you get all the Wumpa fruit and the floating box is destroyed. Then spin-attack the arrow box. Get past a couple of crabs and over two chasms to reach the temple steps.
Jump up the steps of the temple, smashing boxes as you go, including another Aku Aku box. When you reach the top, hit the box with a “C” to save your progress at the checkpoint. If you die, you start back at this point instead of at the beginning. There’s another Aku Aku box. Collect the third mask, and you become temporarily invincible if you haven’t taken any damage and lost a mask.
You now face turtles. If you jump on them, they flip over for a short time and then turn back over and keep moving. Hit them with a spin attack to defeat them. However, if you’re invincible via the Aku Aku Mask, simply run into them as you rush through the jungle path. Don’t forget to jump over the chasms!
When you come to a fork, take the path to the right. You eventually reach a chasm too wide to jump across. Hit the box on the left side of the trail, and a bridge of boxes appears. This is the toughest part of the level. You need to smash all the boxes without falling into the chasm if you want to earn a Clear Gem. Jump onto the first and move forward a bit each time to land on the next box. One of the boxes has an extra life. This takes some practice, so you may have to do it several times before you get it right. Luckily the checkpoint isn’t too far away.
After getting across the bridge of boxes, keep going down the trail. When you reach the point near the end where the two trails converge, go back down the left trail to pick up two remaining boxes so you can get all 49. Now head back up the trail and jump across the last chasm. If you got all of the boxes, a Clear Gem is waiting for you. Collect the gem and jump onto the teleport platform to end the level.

This is a short level, but you must get through it with few errors to obtain a relic. Jump on the arrow box for a three-second yellow time box that stops the clock. It’s important to grab all three masks, so that when you reach the turtles, you can plow right through them. Take the right path at the fork to save some time.
