This is the second boss on Cortex Island and the toughest fight so far. However, once you learn the attacks, you can counter them and inflict damage. Nitrus starts off by throwing a flash of green chemicals. When it hits the ground, it turns into a blob monster. Stand on the B, then as soon as the flask hits, jump to land just short of the square—you’ll drop onto the blob. Spin attacks don’t work; defeat it with a jump. Next, Nitrus throws a purple flask. Start to one side, then jump to the other side when you see it in the air. It causes an explosion that deals damage.
After the purple flask, Nitrus throws two green ones. The first lands in the same spot, the second to the left. Jump on the first blob as before; from there, jump left to land on the second. Use our screenshot to help you plan your jumps. If you miss, retreat from the blob. It jumps a few times. Wait for it to stop, then jump on it. You then must avoid three purple explosive flasks. Start on one side. As he throws the first, jump to the middle, to the other side, and then to the middle to avoid them all.
Now you deal with three blobs. The first two land in the same spots in the same order. The third lands in the square to the left of the B. You can’t see it on-screen when you’re jumping on the others, so jump to that location after defeating the second blob.
Nitrus throws six purple flasks. Again, start on one side and work your way over to the other side and back. Note that he always aims at where you are, not at where you will be. Keep moving!
At this point, in his desperation, Nitrus drinks his chemicals and turns into a large green monster. He plans to pound you. Spin attacks don’t work. Jump up onto a brick that falls. Wait until he’s almost in range of hitting you with his fists, then jump onto his head to inflict damage. Timing is key: jump too early, and you fall short; wait too long, and you get hit. When his fist hits right next to the brick, that’s the time to jump.
Move to the brick on the other side of the lab and jump up onto it. Wait again until Nitrus is close, and jump onto his head a second time. Get up onto the next brick and repeat the process a third time to finally defeat this boss. You must get through this fight without losing a life, or you start over from the beginning. Once you defeat him, you earn the “Nitrus Broken” award.
