Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Guide › Cortex Island

Heavy Machinery

Rewards: Clear Gem—destroy all 86 boxes.

This level takes place inside a factory. There are new enemies here, as well as new threats. Most of the stages are horizontal, and the few vertical parts are easy and safe. Some of the enemies cannot be defeated, so avoid them. Watch for red-hot pipes throughout the level—they hurt.

Right at the start, you meet new foes. Jump over the ones that hover up and down above gaps. Spin attacks also defeat them. When dealing with the turtle-like robots, either jump on them or spin-attack to clear them out. Watch out for individual segments of walkway with small rockets. If you stand on them too long, they drop and you lose a life. Jump off quickly after landing.

Two types of pipes cross the walkway. The icy-cold pipes are safe to touch and stand on. The red-hot pipes are not. Jump over them. Also watch for the floating enemies with spikes. Don’t jump on them or use a spin attack, unless you’re invincible with the Aku Aku Mask. When you reach the second double set of hot pipes, jump over them and move forward to drop to an unseen walkway below to a secret area.

Move left and smash boxes for an extra life and a Nitrus Brio icon. After grabbing the mask, continue left and take the platform back up to the upper walkway. Jump over a series of hot pipes and grab a Tawna icon from a box. There’s a second Nitrus Brio icon along this area as well.

Eventually you come across conveyor belts. They can be a problem when enemies and hot pipes are nearby. To wait for enemies, and to avoid being pulled into a hot pipe, simply move in the opposite direction of the conveyor belt’s trajectory. Continue right and jump onto a small elevator platform that takes you down. Jump off to the left and hit a checkpoint, then jump over some spiky floating enemies.

Keep going left, and you eventually reach a box with the second Tawna icon inside. The next threat is steam vents. Watch for the vents to open as a warning. Then a burst of steam emerges. Wait until the vents close before jumping onto or over these threats. Continue to a platform that carries you across a gap to the last Tawna icon, as well as the Tawna portal.

Tawna Bonus Stage

This bonus stage can be tough. You must smash 19 boxes—a mix of regular and fruit boxes, all of which are floating. The fruit boxes break after being jumped on five times. This means you must count your jumps so you know when to proceed to the next box. Work your way from left to right, clearing each column of boxes before jumping to the next. There are no extra lives here. However, if you destroy all the boxes, you net 119 Wumpa fruit, which gives you an extra life when you return to the level.

After returning to the level, move down step-like walkway sections, then jump over a series of hot pipes. It gets tougher when the walkway changes to a conveyor belt. Get over a steam vent, then jump onto a platform that takes you to the next stage. Pass a couple of steam vents to reach the checkpoint, then continue down more steps. At the bottom, jump up and grab a mask from an Aku Aku box. Take another platform to a lower level, and when you reach a yellow walkway section, bounce up to a column of boxes. Break them all to gain another mask from the Aku Aku box on top.

Head right. When you reach a series of steam vents, wait for the first to close and begin moving across, carefully jumping over a hot pipe along the way. Ride a platform up to another area. Here you ride platforms to the right and must jump over pipes as the platforms pass under them. Stand to the left side of the platform so that when you jump, the right side is already coming out from under the pipe. Finally, jump over to a box with the third Nitrus Brio icon and use the now-activated portal.

Nitrus Brio Bonus Stage

This stage is quite difficult, but you must complete it to destroy all of the boxes and earn the Clear Gem. Jump across a series of boxes to reach a switch. Jump on it to make a second level of boxes appear. Jump across them to the left to reach a second switch. Finally, jump across the highest row of boxes that appear to reach the platform on the opposite side. The top row is tough since you’re jumping off the top of the screen and can’t see where you’ll land until the last moment. Finishing the stage nets you 30 boxes and six extra lives.

Ride a platform down to a lower area. Move right to reach a vertical stage, where you jump on bounce pads to collect fruit and boxes as you continue to higher and higher bounce pads. Eventually these take you to the end of the level and the exit portal.

Time Trial

Time Requirements

Sapphire: 2:20:00

Gold: 1:57:82

Platinum: 1:36:29

This is a long level for a time trial. While it’s not too tough, it’s easy to be careless while rushing. Use spin attacks to get past the floating enemies without the spikes, and keep moving as much as possible. You must pause for the spiky enemies and steam vents, but avoid stopping the rest of the time, and hit all of the time boxes to temporarily stop the clock.
