Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Guide › Cortex Island

Toxic Waste

Rewards: Blue Gem—destroy all 39 boxes without losing a life.

This level is relatively short and only has one threat—barrels. Some roll while others bounce. The only enemy is the thug throwing the barrels.

The action starts right at the beginning. If you don’t move quickly, you get hit by the first rolling barrel. The thug is directly ahead of you. There are also two arrow boxes, each with a fruit box above it. Get the fruit and destroy the boxes. Since they’re off to the side, don’t worry about barrels, which only roll down the center walkway. Advance toward the thug, jumping barrels as you go, and defeat him with a spin attack. Another tactic is to take out the thug first, then go back for the boxes. Continue along the walkway and pick up a mask from an Aku Aku box.

Some sections of walkway are clear. However, when you reach an area with more boxes, barrels start rolling. Stand off to the side near the boxes to avoid them, and smash away. One of the boxes contains the first Tawna icon. Move up the ramp to find the next thug. As before, jump over the barrels and spin-attack to clear the way. The first checkpoint is up the ramp.

The second Tawna icon is in one of the two boxes on the left side of the walkway as you’re jumping over barrels. Don’t forget to pick it up. Keep going and defeat the third thug.

Now the level gets really challenging. In addition to the rolling barrels, every third barrel bounces as it comes at you. The key is to watch where they bounce. Get to a spot on the side to observe the pattern and learn which places to avoid. Move toward the bouncing barrels, and as they rise, rush underneath them. Smash all the boxes, even the TNT. Defeat the next thug, then use the checkpoint.

All the barrels bounce in the next area, so timing is key. Move to the side and jump up to grab an extra life from the wooden box. Then retreat before the TNT boxes explode. Continue to the next box and the third Tawna icon to activate the portal to the bonus stage.

Tawna Bonus Stage

There are 13 boxes in this stage. While it’s straightforward, the TNT boxes force a timer on you. When you jump across to the boxes, you land on the first TNT box. This starts the timer. Quickly move right, spin-attack the first column of boxes so you can jump over them, and make your way up and over the last group of boxes to reach the final platform before the explosions occur. Don’t try for all the wooden boxes; the chain-reaction explosions take care of them. There are two extra lives at the end near the exit portal.

The final section is the most difficult. Head up the ramp and stop before you reach the platform—that’s where the barrels bounce. As soon as one bounces over you, run forward and jump across to the small platform, then to the longer platform. Stop at the edge of the longer platform to wait for another barrel to bounce, then rush forward to spin-attack the thug. Continue to the portal to exit the level.

Time Trial

Time Requirements

Sapphire: 1:16:00

Gold: 1:03:47

Platinum: 0:55:75

Move quickly; don’t stop. Only go after time boxes and masks. You should have no trouble until you reach the bouncing barrels. Even then, if you’ve kept moving and jumping over the rolling barrels, your timing should be correct for running under the bouncing ones. At the last section, learn where they bounce and wait in the safe spots as you advance toward the last thug and then the portal.

Blue Gem

Getting the Blue Gem on your first run-through can be tough. Luckily, the level is short, so multiple attempts aren’t too much of a hassle. The bouncing barrels are the toughest threat. To avoid them, practice and learn when they bounce. Grab the masks and try to save them for the bouncing-barrel sections.
