Return To Castle Black To Give Your Report To Lord Commander Mormont

Objective Point A
View Map

After dispatching Poddy, retrace your steps through the Gift and return to Castle Black. Enter the Common Hall in the center of the fortress to find Jeor Mormont. Visit all the merchants in and around the Common Hall to sell unwanted items and upgrade your gear.

Objective Point B
View Map

Jeor Mormont waits for you on the top floor of the Common Hall. You discuss the events at Icemark, and you tell him of Poddy’s desertion. The Lord Commander also hands you a letter from Jon Arryn, the King’s Hand, which has been specially delivered to Castle Black for you. It asks you to protect a young woman and reveals her place of hiding in a riddle that only you can answer. You and Jon were friends in the past, and you use that knowledge to figure out where the young woman is hiding: Mole’s Town.

Book Watch: Jon Arryn

In the A Game of Thrones novel, Jon Arryn dies early in the story’s events. Arryn’s passing has a major effect on the game—it is Jon Arryn’s letter that compels Mors to accept the quest to protect the mysterious woman Jeyne. Jon’s death also had a major effect on the events in the novel, as his friend Eddard Stark then became the King’s Hand. We can infer that Mors Westford and Eddard Stark likely knew each other at one point during the great war 15 years ago.

Meet Jon Arryn’s Emissary, Ser Godric Donnerly

Objective Point C
View Map

Mormont asks you to see Ser Godric Donnerly, the man in Jon Arryn’s service who personally delivered the letter. He waits for you on the ground floor. Before you leave the top floor, your conversation should lead you to getting the King’s Hand Codex entry.

Downstairs, speak with Ser Godric. He talks a little about his mission to the north, and in the middle of the conversation, you can get into a heated debate with his lieutenant Jared about an altercation that occurred during the Baratheon Rebellion. You agree to accompany Ser Godric to Mole’s Town to find this woman. Unfortunately, the Lord Commander interrupts with grim tidings: A raven has just flown in from King’s Landing with a message that Jon Arryn, the King’s Hand, is dead. The world has become a darker place.
