Castle Black
Meet up with new recruits at the training ground
Objective Point A
You begin the game following the story of Mors Westford, a brother of the Night’s Watch who is particularly adept at hunting down enemies and cleaving skulls. As Mors, you hunt down a fellow Night’s Watch brother who has deserted his post. After you successfully capture the deserter, character creation for Mors occurs (see the “Mors Westford” chapter for full details). After character creation, you return to Castle Black, the main fortress of the Night’s Watch. Under Lord Commander Jeor Mormont’s orders, you execute the deserter for dishonoring the brotherhood. Before you leave the area, make sure you pick up the Executioner’s Axe (two-handed weapon) stuck in the nearby bloody stump.
Objective Point B
You have several young recruits in your charge, so it’s off to the training ground to give them a bit of combat training. When you arrive, the combat tutorial begins (players new to the game’s combat get trained while the new recruits get trained). The tutorial runs you through the basics of combat as you fight in a one-on-one battle against a single recruit and then face off against two recruits in a group battle. For the detailed ins and outs of combat, see the “Combat” section of the “The World of Westeros” chapter.
Book Watch: The Wall
The Wall is 700 feet tall and guards Westeros against the perils and horrors of the north. In the novel A Game of Thrones , supernatural events occur in the Haunted Forest north of Castle Black; at the same time, two members of the Night’s Watch, Will and Ser Waymar Royce, come face-to-face with the Others. In the game, the Others are only rumors whispered by the new recruits of the Night’s Watch, though there is frequent action against the wildlings who harass those who guard the Wall.
Track down Cregan at Icemark
Objective Point C
Lord Commander Mormont will interrupt the end of your skirmishes with the new recruits. Another brother of the Night’s Watch, Cregan, has betrayed his vows and murdered a boy at Castle Black. Unfortunately, Cregan led a patrol to Icemark earlier in the day, so Mormont charges you with hunting down Cregan for answers. Three of the new recruits—Ronnet Hill, Terrence Celtigar, and Poddy—will accompany you to Icemark.
The recruits leave to get ready for their first mission beyond Castle Black. In the meantime, you can explore the rest of the castle grounds. Visit the Castle Black steward at the training ground to buy basic weapons and sell anything you don’t want to keep for the long haul. Before you leave the Castle Black steward, ensure that your weapon slots match your Stance. For example, a Hedge Knight wants a two-handed weapon for your primary slot, a Landed Knight wants a one-handed weapon and shield, and a Magnar needs two weapons.
After you leave the training ground, search for minor loot hidden around the buildings, and enter the Common Hall if you want to talk to Walder about the “The Faith of Our Ancestors” side quest. When you’re ready to leave Castle Black, seek out your three recruits huddled on the outskirts of the castle and leave via the nearby exit.
Side Quest: The Faith of Our Ancestors
Enter the Common Hall at the center of Castle Black if you want to pick up “The Faith of our Ancestors” side quest. Walder waits for you up on the top level and will give you the quest if you’re interested in it. Your fellow brother does restoration work on pieces of art and has done an exquisite job of beautifying one of your family heirlooms. For more details on collecting the other statues and completing the quest, see the “Side Quests” chapter at the end of the walkthrough chapters.
