Outposts are hostile camps controlled by enemy tribes. Claim them all to make Oros safer for the Wenja. Claimed outposts can be used as Fast Travel points in the Map menu and also act as an access point for your Reward Stash.
Outposts are heavily fortified with enemies which would be impossible for Takkar to take on all at once. This means you need to plan your attack and plot your moves to prevent yourself from being overrun by enemies.
Planning the Attack
There are many things to factor in when you want to take over an Outpost. While you can avoid stealth and attempt to take on each enemy in hand to hand combat, you get a large XP bonus for clearing out the outpost while remaining undetected, with a smaller bonus for completing the outpost without reinforcements being called.
Reinforcements
If you are spotted during a raid on an outpost the enemies begin to call for reinforcements to join the fight. Clearing an Outpost without raising the alarm will net you an XP bonus.
Stationary Alarms
Stationary Alarms can be found throughout the encampment, and are marked as a white horn on your mini-map once you’ve located them. These can be operated by any enemy in the camp.
To prevent them from being used, you can walk up to them and press Square/X to crush them without the use of your weapons. This action is performed without any additional movement from your character, so you can stay concealed in a bush.
You can also destroy the Alarm by hitting it with any weapon including a ranged weapon, like your bow or a thrown rock.
Elite Slingers
Elite Slingers carry a Horn on them at all times. When they have discovered you, they reach for their horn. You can stop them from calling for reinforcements by attacking them. If you are at a distance, quickly throw your weapon or a rock to stun them, then quickly kill them. Elite Slingers wear masks so it takes two headshots with a Bow to take them out. A thrown spear to the chest is the best way to put down an Elite Slinger from a distance.
The Approach
A stealth approach is not only the safest, but will net you the most possible XP if you can eliminate all enemies in the camp without being spotted.
If you fail a stealth approach, you can remove yourself from combat and Fast Travel to another location, then return to try again without forfeiting your XP bonus.
In general, it’s a safe bet to eliminate any type of Alarm before taking out other enemies, this takes a lot of pressure off you, while you eliminate all enemies in the base.
Always scout out possible hiding spots as well as a good exfiltration route on the off chance that you get surrounded and progressing forward is too hard. Some enemies patrol around the camp; use your Owl to observe their routes. Depending on the time of day, some enemies leave their patrol routes in favor of a spot near the fire, or a bed in their tents.
Time of Day
While the amount of units in an Outpost does not change at any time of day, their positions, however, do change. If you’d prefer to wait for a specific time of day to begin your attack, find the closest camp site, light the fire, and sleep until the time you choose to attack.
Day Time
Attacking an outpost during the day allows you to plan your attack much easier due to the lack of predators and the visibility of the enemies. The enemies are also a spaced out farther from each other so singling them out for attack is a little easier. However, you are much easier to spot, enemies will be on patrol routes, and gaining access to the alarms to Destroy them is much harder.
Night Time
Night Time allows you to infiltrate the Outpost much easier, enemies are more likely to be asleep and around the campfires. With most of the enemies centralized in a few locations, it’s much easier to disable the Alarms preventing an unwanted reinforcement call. Stealth approaches are much easier at night and, in general, a night time approach is the best option, but don’t expect all of the enemies to be asleep.
A patrolling unit can creep up on you in the darkness without your noticing so always make sure you stay aware of your surroundings.
Staying on the outskirts of town at night means you are likely to run into a pack of roaming Wolves or other dangerous night time predators. This can not only slow you down, but the fight may alert the enemies at the nearby Outpost.
Locating enemies at night time is hard due to the lack of light, make sure you use Hunter Vision and your Owl to plot your way into the base and locate all of the enemies.
