Team Play

When you play alone, organized team play considerations don’t really apply. You may coordinate who goes for which power weapon, and where to defend on a map, but not much more than that. You can be a lot more coordinated than that if you put in a bit more effort with your team. Following are some ideas to consider.

Team Weapon Selection

On any given team of five, you can spread the various rifles and shotguns around so that you have long-range Hammerburst coverage, close-range Retro Lancer and Sawed-Off brawlers, and medium-range Lancer and Gnasher generalists. Figure out who in your group is best at any given range band, and make sure they use the best weapons. Take into account the map and game mode you are playing—some maps need more close- or long-range firepower.

Team Movement

Moving with teammates is smart play in any mode. When you play in a more organized fashion, your team is much more dangerous when it moves as a group. You can rely on your teammates more heavily than you would in a public game. This means that marked targets get taken down more quickly, and you will be revived almost instantly should you be downed near a teammate. One point: Don’t hug your teammates if you know the enemy is packing a Mortar, a Boomshot, Frags, or other explosive weapons!

Team Flanking

Flanking is especially devastating with a team. If you can get to the side or behind enemy forces and mark a key target, you can have your teammates lay down suppressing fire. This can distract them long enough for you to hit your target with a much better chance of total surprise.

It’s also effective to split your team and have two players move out as a small strike force to hit the other team from the side while the remainder of your team fights to control a key area or power weapon. Just be aware that this is more effective on maps with a lot of hard cover and alternate routes. The more easily you can be spotted while you’re moving, the less likely you are to get into position with the element of surprise. This is especially true if you’re playing against another organized team; expect to be marked the instant you are seen.

Defending Terrain

One of the most effective tactics you can fully exploit with an organized team is controlling critical map locations. This is often a key power weapon spawn, but it can also be a control point, a chokepoint, or quite often, elevated terrain with good line of sight. This is most critical in Team Deathmatch, Warzone, and Execution, but it’s important in all modes.

Decide early the areas you plan to fight to control, and target those areas immediately. If you can arrive in force with the bulk of your team, the opposing team will have a hard time dislodging you, especially if they split up their team and are scattered throughout the map. Once you lock down a key area, you can exploit it, either by using the power weapon every time it spawns, or by using the terrain advantage to lock down the enemy team.
