The planned pit stop at Mercy has yet to yield any fuel for the submarine. And if there was ever any question about their mission’s urgency, it has now been answered. They now know that the Imulsion doesn’t just affect Locust; humans can turn Lambent as well. The Gears must push deeper into Mercy and get those fueling pumps going before the rest of the quarantined Formers rip them to shreds.
Township of Mercy
Search for the Fuel Pump
Mercy’s few remaining healthy residents have walled themselves off from the Formers, but the barricades don’t last forever. Formers quickly burst through the town hall’s window and kill the two remaining Stranded in the area. Load up on ammo from the town hall’s shelves. Then run to the courtyard and hurdle the low wall to avoid being cornered.
Throngs of Formers stream from multiple directions into the courtyard just outside the town hall. They leap over the walls, run across rooftops, and eventually even kick down barricaded doors. There are a few ways to fend off the swarming Lambent. One option is to let your squad go out into the courtyard to squelch the initial crush leaping over the nearby walls, while you stay inside the town hall and gun down those that funnel through the doorway. This has the advantage of exploiting a chokepoint and keeping you near a large supply of ammo. However, the risk of being overrun is much greater, particularly on harder difficulty settings.
Another option is to join the COGs in the courtyard and fight together back to back. The Formers seem to come from all directions at first, but most originate on the courtyard’s far side. Take cover near the curved wall on the right for greater coverage and a lesser chance of being surrounded. Many leap down from the roof straight ahead, then they burst through the wooden barricades of the tower in the far left corner. This is the last group. Have a Frag Grenade and the Lancer ready for them!
Hold your ground and slaughter the Formers that burst through the barricaded doors on the left. Return to the town hall to gather more ammo—the Gnasher and Lancer serve you well for now, as does the Gorgon Pistol if you happen to have it.
Gradually lead the squad up the path beyond where the barricade was, and be ready for another swarm of Lambent humans. Keep the Gnasher on hand to repel surprise attacks. Switch to the Lancer when you see multiple enemies approaching from the distance.
The pipeline has been re-routed straight through the church. Enjoy this area’s calm, and follow the path beyond the gate toward the church. Pick up the Frag Grenades to the right of the stairs leading up to the church’s main entrance. Dom notices that the front door has been barricaded. He instructs the squad to head left to check the church’s back entrance.
Activate the Pump
The fuel pump is located at the rear of the church, near the cemetery where the Flores family is buried—or where Maria was supposed to be laid to rest with her and Dom’s children.
Dom takes a moment to visit the grave. Then he helps Marcus activate the pump. The pump’s rumbling draws the attention of the Formers that were barricaded inside the church.
Clear the Church
Rush toward the church steps. Plant one Frag Grenade on the stairs and another in the center of the yard, between the two monuments where Anya and the others take cover.
Take cover behind the crumbling gravestone or the low wall. Open fire with the Lancer once the Frag Grenades kill the initial waves. Additional Formers approach from atop the church roof. So, don’t focus solely on the doors, or you might not see those flanking around the monuments.
Regroup at the Gas Station
The fastest way back to the gas station is through the underground cavern, below the church. The cave was used as an air raid bunker during the Pendulum Wars, and the elevator inside it should still work.
If you don’t already have one, equip the Lancer in the center of the church. Use its chainsaw to cut through the boards on the left. This leads into the Imulsion cavern. Dizzy informs Marcus over the radio that the fuel truck is leaking like a sieve. They have to abandon it and head to Char—they’ll have to search for fuel there. Ride the elevator at the end of the path up to the surface near the fueling station.
Defend Against the Attacking Enemy Forces
The elevator leads the Gears to a roof overlooking the gas station. Dizzy and Jace are pinned down by a crush of attacking Locust. They desperately need some support fire.
Take cover behind the sandbags and open fire on the Locust Drones and Boomers exiting the cave. Most of them are focused on Dizzy and Jace, but the Boomers send some Boomshot rockets sailing up toward your position.
Use the “Spotting” ability to target each of the Boomers, and pump as much Lancer ammo as you have into them. Save your Gnasher for the Locust that grapple up to your vantage point. Continue using the Lancer until you kill all of the Boomers.
Swap the spent Lancer for the Longshot, and return to cover near the sandbags. Snipe each of the Drones down below. Nearly two dozen Drones make their way out into the open. Some take cover behind the metal apparatus on the left, but most exit the cave and set up their attack in the center of the clearing.
Listen for the warning that the Drones are grappling onto the roof. Immediately switch to the Gnasher. Look for a grappling hook on the roof’s edge and blast them as they hoist themselves upward.
Continue firing at the Drones until Anya alerts the group that Formers are rushing onto the roof from behind you. Pick up the Frag Grenades, swap the Longshot for the Lancer, and load up on ammo. Cut down the Formers with the Lancer and Gnasher. Don’t let your guard down, as this battle is still far from over.
As if the Locust invasion isn’t troubling enough, Lambent Stalks begin to sprout near your position on the rooftop. Target the Stalk Pods as soon as they emerge. Then use the Gnasher or Frag Grenades to take out the Dark Drones that spawn from the pods. Three Lambent Stalks spawn an endless supply of Dark Drones. The enemies drop from their Stalk Pods at close range. Put the Gnasher’s short-range stopping power to the test, and hold them off long enough for Dom to devise an escape plan.
