Tales of Zestiria Guide › Walkthrough › Part 3: The Trials of the Shepherd

Lefay, Shrine of the Water Trial

The Water Trial

Lefay, Shrine of the Water Trial

Altul, a protector seraph, welcomes Sorey and his group into the shrine of Amenoch. Their conversation is interrupted by the cries of an angry hellion, Asura, who is looking for his sword. The task in this trial is to discover why he became a hellion.

The most difficult portion of this trial is navigating the shrine, which is filled with puzzle rooms that require careful use of the Spectral Cloak map action. This action will only last for the amount of time it takes to cross two floor tiles, so you’ll need to plan your movements in great detail. If you get caught in the gaze of an eye, you’ll be instantly transported back to the pool of water at the entrance. Study these maps closely and you should be able to clear the area without a problem, but remember that one wrong move can send you all the way back to the beginning.

The first floors provide you with clearly marked floor tiles that show which areas are visible to the eyes, but as you proceed higher, those markings are not available, so you’ll have to scan your surroundings dilligently before moving.

As you progress, you will need to make sure to open the special treasure chests marked on the maps in this guide. These chests contain journal entries of a past Shepherd who was once a swordsmith. As you read Asura’s story, Sorey will learn why he became a hellion. An earnest Shepherd, overwhelmed by his perceived inadequacies, created a marvelous but dangerous sword.

Once you reach the raised dais, step on it to be transported up to the top floor, and activate the save point before continuing onward to battle Asura.

Armatize with Edna and exploit Asura's elemental weakness. His artes can be difficult to interrupt, so it’s safer to block or evade when he starts casting, rather than attempting to stop him. He hits hard and has a special ability that extends the amount of time you're stunned, so use restoration artes like Fairy Circle (and items if you don’t want to use your BG) to keep your HP high. If battling close range becomes overwhelming, take control of Edna and lay your earth artes on him from a safe distance. Once you whittle away most of his health, a cutscene will appear and Altul will aid Sorey. Now you can finish Asura off. Though you can defeat him like any other hellion, you can now use the mystic arte Aqua Limit while armatized with Mikleo to have a fitting end. When you defeat Asura, Mikelo's title "Sub Lord Friend", raises to "Piercing Azure."

Head back and allow yourself to be transported back to the entrance where Altul is waiting. Asura’s drive for power corrupted him, and Altul, his Prime Lord, took the sword for safekeeping. He offers the sword to Sorey, but Sorey declines, passing the second test. At this point, Lady Maltran steps in. She takes the weapon and reveals that she has been a hellion all along, working for Heldalf and trying to incite war while using Alisha as a puppet for her own political manipulations.

The party is concerned with what this revelation will do to Alisha, who has looked up to Maltran for most of her life. Now that you have the spiritual power of water and this new information, you can stop by Ladylake for some scenes with Alisha and Maltran in the Noble’s District. Once you’re ready to proceed to the next trial, head back to Rolance territory and enter Westronbolt Gorge, where you can now handle the powerful malevolent domain enough to travel normally.
