The Hunters aren’t the only ones that need to watch for footprints. Although the Monster cannot actively see footprints without using Smell, there are a few signs you should look out for.
While dead Elite (Albino) animals are a good source of food for the Monster, they are also an accurate sign that the Hunters came through, as no other creature is likely to kill them.
Smell
By pressing the Smell button, the Monster uses its Smell ability to sniff out the Hunters, creatures, and other potential threats.
When using Smell, you’ll see a variety of colors that represent different types of creatures, and other threats to the monster.
| COLOR | MEANING |
|---|---|
| BLUE | Edible Copses |
| YELLOW | Small and Medium Prey, Incapacitated Hunters and Survivors |
| ORANGE | Medium and Large Predators, Survivors, Non-Startled Birds |
| RED | Hunters and Daisy, Scared Birds, Carrion Birds |
| GREEN | Nest Eggs, Hatched Goliath |
Although most creatures that show up yellow in color are non-threatening, some still actively attack a Stage 1 Monster. Elite (Albino) creatures that grant Buffs will not show the Buff symbol through objects, forcing the Monster to obtain a closer look.
Use Smell to set up traps and evade the Hunters. Watch for the moment one Hunter splits off, or catch them recovering from an engagement with other creatures.
The Monster can also detect the footsteps of the Hunters, as well as prints that it has left behind itself. Monster prints show up in green, while Hunters leave small red footprints. Hunter footprints tend to disappear quickly, so if you find them, the Hunters are most likely close by. Smell can also detect the footprints of cloaked Hunters.
