Moving Around the Environment
The Goliath tutorial runs you through the basics of playing as the Monster. It teaches you how to move around the environment, along with information about evolving and fighting the Hunters. Finishing it within the goal times and earning the three Medals grants you experience and Badge pieces. To get the Monster Gold Medal, you must swiftly move between the sections, completing the objectives as quickly as you can.
Start out by following the waypoints ahead, using the Climb button to scale the rock formations. Hold the button down as you run into a scalable surface, and Goliath smoothly mantles over obstacles or ascends walls. A crossed-out reticle indicates a wall that you cannot climb.
After ascending the cliff wall, Goliath reaches a big gap. Press the Special Mobility button to leap into the air, and then use your reticle to aim the jump. Along the bottom of the cursor, three red marks represent your stamina. Each leap uses one of these marks, though the marks recharge over time.
It is important to learn how to use your stamina best to flee the Hunters. Be careful using your final bar of stamina, as you don’t want to end up having to drop to the ground far below and then climb back up, when a leap to another platform could save valuable time.
Hunting the Wildlife
After a few more leaps and scaling another cliff wall, drop into an enclosed area. Click the Smell button to reveal the nearby wildlife. Use your melee attack to take them all down. The Smell ability is extremely valuable, so use it often to find the Hunters, wildlife, and corpses.
Before moving on, hold the Eat button to feed on the three corpses. Use the Smell ability when feeding to avoid being snuck up on. Feeding is vital to your success, as it is the only way to build the Monster’s energy and evolve to the second and third stages. It is also how you regenerate your armor. This is also very important, as health cannot be recouped. Always remember that it is better to lose armor than health. If possible, you can flee a battle, feed on some wildlife, and return to the fight.
Sneaking to Avoid Detection
With the next barrier dropped, press the Sneak button to crouch. Sneaking leaves no tracks and reduces noise while you’re moving, which makes it tougher for the Hunters to find you. Use this to your advantage to lead them one way as you sneak away in the opposite direction.
Smell to expose more wildlife, and move toward the nearest one. While sneaking, a melee attack performs a Pounce attack on your target. Goliath continues to beat up on the foe until it is dead or until the Monster is hit.
Pounce on two more wildlife to continue the tutorial. Be sure to sneak before attacking, or they will not count toward your objective. This attracts Carrion Birds to your location. These birds appear randomly when feeding and give away your position to the Hunters.
Spin around until you spot the short cliff that leads farther into the map. Climb out of the cavern to startle a group of birds at the top. If you see these birds hanging out in the environment, you should either keep your distance or sneak past them to avoid giving away your location.
Evolving the Monster
Drop into another enclosed area, kill the wildlife, and feast on their corpses to fill up your energy meter. Once it is full, hold the Zoom and Hit buttons together to evolve to the next stage. Though you have no worries here, you are incredibly vulnerable during this process. In a typical game, you may want to find a more secure location.
Evolving makes Goliath bigger and stronger, also giving him more health. During each evolve process, you get to select new abilities or upgrade existing ones. Select the three abilities that you want to improve. Make your choices quickly so that you are ready to go once the Monster is done changing.
Using the Monster’s Abilities
Move through the new opening, and look down on the wildlife below. It is now time to learn how to use your abilities. These special attacks allow you to take on bigger creatures, along with the well-armed Hunters. Each Monster has four abilities that you trigger by pressing one of the four Ability buttons.
The four icons below your health bar represent these four moves. If the corresponding icon is lit up, you can perform the ability. Press the Ability 2 button to perform a Leap Smash on the wildlife. Be sure to get one of the creatures with the attack, or you will have to wait and try again.
Escaping Harpoon Traps
As you move to the next waypoint, Harpoon Traps snare you. Whack them with a melee attack to escape their grasp. Repeat this farther down the bridge, when a couple more grab hold.
Defeating the Soldiers
At the next waypoint, you must deal with three soldiers. These are the first humans you face in the game, but they are not nearly as tough as the Hunters themselves. You can use any of your attacks to defeat them, but you must hit them with your Fire Breath at least once. This attack can hit multiple enemies simultaneously and continues to damage them over time. If your target moves, sweep the fire along with him to be sure to catch him on fire. Once you’ve taken care of these three, continue to the next marker, swiping the Harpoon Trap that can ensnare the Monster.
A second group of soldiers requires at least one hit with the Rock Throw. Aim carefully with the rock, as it can easily miss its target if the soldier flees or the projectile clips an object. Use all of your abilities to eliminate the foes.
Find a third group on a nearby dirt road. Before continuing, you must damage them with at least one Charge move. Use the ability immediately to push them against the nearby barrier, and then bombard them with the rest of your attacks.
With them out of the way, head back down the road, where an Elite (Albino) Crowbill Sloth awaits. Killing an Elite (Albino) wildlife grants a temporary Buff to the Hunters or Monster. The Monster must eat the creature to gain the bonus, while each Hunter simply presses the Reload/Revive/Use button to obtain it. Eat the Crowbill Sloth to gain an increase in damage output.
Fighting the Hunters
Proceed to the next waypoint atop a rock formation to reach your final objective. The four Hunters are introduced in a short cinematic.
Start out by performing a Leap Smash into the group, and then continue eliminating them one at a time. Target Val the Medic first, as she will otherwise just heal the rest of the group. Hank, the Support, has a Shield Protector that protects a fellow Hunter, so killing him second is ideal. Use all of Goliath’s powerful abilities to defeat the Hunters. This completes the tutorial. Finish it within a target time to earn a Badge piece, a Medal, and XP.
