With the exception of Defend, in every match, the Monster is tasked with evolving from Stage 1. Each level of evolution grants the Monster bonus amounts of health and more ability points. An effective Monster player balances time between combating the Hunters and hunting down creatures to regain armor.
Evolution Meter
The evolution meter is only visible when the Monster is consuming a creature. You can raise the evolution meter in two ways.
The easiest way to raise the meter is hunting down different creatures throughout the map. Don’t spend too much time in one spot when consuming creatures, as the Hunters are always hot on your trail. Eating creatures also regains some of the Monster’s lost armor. When you’ve gained a little bit of armor, and the Hunters aren’t nearby, consider taking on an Elite (Albino) animal to gain a Buff and fill a considerable amount of the evolution meter.
Incapacitating Hunters also contributes to the evolution meter, granting two bars whenever a Hunter is downed. If you find yourself with an evolution meter that is almost full, consider going into combat to fill the rest of the meter.
When to Evolve
Evolving at the wrong time can end the game early for the Monster.
Get distance from the Hunters; not only does evolving force you to stay stationary during the process, but you also lose any armor that was accumulated prior to the start of the evolution. The Monster is most vulnerable during and after the process, so look for an area that helps visually conceal the Monster during evolution, such as high ground or a few bushes.
Always have a way out. Be conscious of the area around you, and have an escape plan if the Hunters catch you mid-evolve.
Because you lose all armor during evolution, don’t let it go to waste! Engage in combat with the Hunters, hopefully getting a few strikes on them before evolving. After the fight, gain some distance from the Hunters. If executed correctly, the Hunters will not chase, as they will be focused on recovering and healing each other. Using this tactic improves your advantage by both weakening the Hunters and giving you strength after evolving.
