Shell Soccer

Pair up with a partner and take to the field in Shell Soccer, a fast-paced 2-vs.-2 sporting event in which each team tries to send that soccer shell flying at the opposing team’s row of Goomba goalies. Knock out every opposing Goomba to win the game!

Each game of shell soccer begins with a kickoff, where the shell sits in the center of the field and the players are huddled around it. Rather than rushing after the shell, let the opposing team grab it first—then quickly steal it away! This is highly effective during kickoffs that occur after goals are scored, because the team who lost Goombas will start a little closer to the shell than the team that scored. Keep your momentum going after each goal and steal that shell the moment the action resumes!

While carrying the shell, press 2 to pass to your partner, or press 1 to shoot for those Goombas. By pressing and holding 1, you can adjust the angle of your shot. This can help you knock out multiple Goombas in one shot. But beware: You’re a sitting duck while taking the time to aim!

Players who aren’t carrying the shell move faster than the shell carrier, which lets defenders quickly catch up. Whenever you’re on defense, try to snatch the shell away from the opposing carrier by pressing 2 to perform a quick sliding steal. Simply slide into the shell carrier to steal the shell away. You cover lots of ground when sliding, so make good use of this excellent defensive move!

When rival defenders are giving you grief, you’ve got to start playing the passing game. One player should remain in rival territory most of the time, ready to accept a long pass and shoot for the Goombas. Stealing the shell is somewhat easy, so let one player handle primary defense while the other moves about downfield, ready to score at a moment’s notice!

Shell Soccer is a great addition to Mario Party 9’s shorter minigames and longer game board romps. Spend some time out there on the field and find your rhythm while you go for the goal!
