Jewelcrafting

Initially, Jewelcrafters create the wire and settings necessary to craft low level rings and necklaces, then start making rings, necklaces, and other random items. A Jeweler’s Kit is required, but it is available at a trivial cost from a Trade vendor. At higher skill levels, Jewelcrafters learn how to cut gems that provide statistical bonuses to socketed equipment. Even at higher skill levels, Jewelcrafters continue to create rings and necklaces for anyone to use.

Jewelcrafting can be an expensive Profession to skill up, so strongly consider Mining as a second Profession, to gather your own ore. Jewelcrafters learn a second ability, called Prospecting, which allows them to break down raw ore and extract different minerals and gems that are otherwise available only through mining.

PRACTICING JEWELCRAFTING

Clicking Prospecting enables you to search five ore of the same type to find gems. Some types of ore of Uncommmon quality, such as Silver, cannot be Prospected. The ore is destroyed in the process, but you gain your shiny jewelcrafting ingredients.

For high-level Jewelcrafting, you need a base set of gems to work with. These are then turned into finished cut gems that provide bonuses when slotted into equipment. Note that you don’t gain points in Jewelcrafting for slotting equipment, only for making the gems.

MAKING MONEY AS A JEWELCRAFTER

Making money with Jewelcrafting primarily centers on creating various stat-enhancing gems for players to put in socketed armor and weapons. More importantly, Jewelcrafters can create both rings and necklaces that can be upgraded to be quite powerful. These items should be in fairly high demand from players. There are also a number of fun vanity items that can be sold on the Auction House for a profit as well.

DRAENOR JEWELCRAFTING

Jewelcrafting in Draenor is vastly different than how the Profession works on Azeroth. Rather than creating a mountain of different colored gems to cut, all Draenor gems only use one primary ingredient: Taladite Crystals. These crystals can be created through a daily cooldown, but they are also created via Work Orders processed at the Gem Boutique. Thus, if you have both the Gem Boutique and Jewelcrafting trained as a Profession, you’ll be able to generate materials much more quickly.

Recipes learned in Draenor can be learned and created at skill level 1. However, there are also other methods of leveling Jewelcrafting quickly while on Draenor. As you quest and complete content, you may find various broken statues, shards, and pieces of jewelry that can be combined with Draenor ore and turned in to your Garrison, in exchange for Garrison Resources. There are also Uncommon and Rare versions of these items that do not need to be repaired; you can just deliver them to your Garrison. These items will also grant you skill points when they are turned in.

Taladite Crystal can be combined with Draenor herbs to create one of six stat-modifying, Uncommon quality gems. Greater amounts of Taladite Crystal can be used in conjunction with both Draenor herbs and Sorcerous elements to craft Rare quality gems that give a higher stat modifier. Sorcerous elements, Fire, Water, Earth, and Air, are magical byproducts of various professions. When you craft an item, you have a chance of also creating a Sorcerous element. In addition to gems, Jewelcrafters can create powerful rings and necklaces for other players. The Epic quality versions of these items can be upgraded up to two times by a Jewelcrafter.
