Blacksmithing

Blacksmithing is the shaping of bars, gems, stones and trade goods into armor and melee weapons. At low levels, Blacksmiths also turn stones uncovered by miners into temporary weapon enhancements. Many unique weapons and armor pieces can be created only by player Blacksmiths for their own use. To be a fully self-sufficient Blacksmith, you may want to take Mining as a second Profession.

PRACTICING BLACKSMITHING

Most Blacksmithing items require a Blacksmithing Hammer to be in your inventory. In addition, work must be completed near an anvil. Anvils are found in any town or city, most often near the Blacksmithing trainers. Some recipes call for items available only from a trade vendor as well, so don’t head for the anvil until you’re sure you have everything you need for your creation.

MAKING MONEY AS A BLACKSMITH

Blacksmithing is a brutal profession on your in-game gold. It’s hard to find a market for your created items as most of these items are only on par with green quest rewards. Only specific Blacksmithing gear at high levels warrants the higher investment in time and materials.

To cut down on the price, take Mining and gather your own ore. Even here you should be careful. Someone joining a guild is likely to have access to their own Blacksmith. Only take this Profession if you know what you’re getting into.

DRAENOR BLACKSMITHING

Blacksmithing in Draenor works much differently than it does on Azeroth. Your primary ingredients for creating any armor or weapons are Truesteel Ingots. These items can be created through a daily cooldown, but it can also be created via Work Orders processed at the Forge. Thus, if you have both The Forge, and Blacksmithing trained as a Profession, you’ll be able to craft recipes much faster—because you’ll be generating Trueforge Ingots much more quickly.

Recipes learned in Draenor can be learned and created at skill level 1. However, there are also other methods of leveling Blacksmithing quickly while on Draenor. As you quest and complete content, you may find various broken armor pieces and rare or unusual pieces of armor that can be combined with Draenor ore and turned in to your Garrison, in exchange for Garrison Resources. These items will also grant you skill points when they are turned in.

Blacksmiths are able to not only create powerful crafted items, but later upgrade the item level of those crafted items to be even more powerful. To create the reagent needed to upgrade an item, Blacksmiths will need even more Truesteel Ingots, as well as a couple of other items. Sorcerous elements, Fire, Water, Earth, and Air, are magical byproducts of various professions. When you craft an item, you have a chance of also creating a Sorcerous element. Different professions create different elements. In addition to Sorcerous elements, you will also need Savage Blood. This item can be obtained through the Barn in your Garrison, or on the Auction House.
