Engineering

Engineering creates a variety of items such as goggles, explosives, ranged weapon scopes, bombs, and mechanical animals. Creating different items with Engineering requires a handful of tools, most of which are created by the Engineer. Many (but not all) of the items created by Engineers require the Engineering skill to use. One of the fun things about being an Engineer is that you never know when some of your creations will misfire, often leading to unexpected results.

Mining is a perfect way to make an Engineer self-sufficient. Pretty much everything an Engineer needs is found while you’re out hunting for metal veins.

PRACTICING ENGINEERING

Clicking the Engineering icon opens a menu of all the schematics you know. Engineers have a few tools that are needed to make various items, so you might want to carry them around with you if you prefer crafting on the fly (or just get a Gnomish Army Knife!). Otherwise, it’s better to work when you’re back in town, near a Bank.

ENGINEERING SPECIALTIES

When you reach an Engineering skill of 200, you are given a choice to specialize in Gnomish Engineering or Goblin Engineering. For the most part, items created by one specialization are usable by any Engineer with a high enough skill level. The main difference is that Goblin Engineers are able to teleport to Everlook (in Winterspring) and Area 52 (in Netherstorm), while Gnomes can travel instantly to Gadgetzan (in Tanaris) or Toshley’s Station (in Blade’s Edge Mountains).

You can change your specialization if you like. There is a fee involved with dropping your specialization, so you may not want to do this too often.

MAKING MONEY AS AN ENGINEER

Engineering is not the best way to go when you’re trying to make gold off your Profession. Because many items created with Engineering require Engineering to use them, your market is reduced. However, some of an Engineer’s products are viable for selling. Selling scopes and crafted Battle Pets is a reasonable source of income, but these items can’t really be expected to sell consistently.

DRAENOR ENGINEERING

Engineering in Draenor is a slightly different process than what you find on Azeroth. Your primary ingredients for creating various devices and gadgets are Gearspring Parts. These can be created by the Engineer, but they are also created via Work Orders processed at the Engineering Works. Thus, if you have both the Engineering Works, and Engineering trained as a Profession, you’ll be able to craft your items far more quickly than with just Engineering alone.

Recipes learned in Draenor can be learned and created at skill level 1. However, there are also other methods of leveling Blacksmithing quickly while on Draenor. As you quest and complete content, you may find various broken robots, scopes, and explosives that can be combined with Draenor ore and turned in to your Garrison, as well as Uncommon or Rare quality versions that don’t actually need repairs. Upon turning them in, you will receive Garrison Resources, as well as Engineering skill points.

Engineering is a much more personalized profession than anything else. Most of the items you create are items that you yourself will be able to use. Engineers on Draenor can create four different types of Epic goggles for themselves, and these goggles can be upgraded up to two times, making them a really desirable item. In addition, Engineers can attach Tinkers to their equipment. These items act sort of like Enchants, but provide a variety of effects that may not necessarily increase your combat performance, but will definitely amp up the fun factor!
