Grand Prix

Try to jostle for one of the item boxes near the start of the race. It can be tough to grab one before the competition thins out, but an early item can be a big help.

As you enter the water, aggressive opponents might knock you out of the ideal position. Depending on your priorities, you can collect the coins along the main path or use the inclines to jump up to the ledge. The ledge offers temporary protection from most enemy attacks, but hoarding coins can pay off in the remaining laps. If you choose to stay on the main path, hop from the top of each incline to help keep your speed up—just make sure you check for overhead Cheep Cheeps!

Remember to check the Clampys for additional item boxes. If you’re confident you can grab one, do so! Most opponents should be unarmed at this point, and a fresh item can give you a real edge.

As you enter the cavern, check the Touch Screen for nearby racers. If you see an opponent heading for the narrow path on the left, try to draft behind them. As your speed picks up, you should be able to knock them into the water. This is also a great spot to drop a Banana or fire off a Green Shell. Of course, other racers can also use these tactics. Stay alert!

If you stick to the main path, use the tactics described in the “Time Trial” section. If you follow the narrow path on the left, hop from the edge of the glide panel, then steer your kart through the stalactites as you glide above the water.
