The Conqueror (Part I)

- Story: With the king’s edict in one hand and your spear in the other, you are tasked with conquering Boeotia for Sparta, making sure the Athenians don’t get there first.
Meet the Spartan Polemarch
Boeotia: Ruins of Plataia
Travel to the Spartan military camp (1) on the top of the mountain in Ruins of Platiaia. When you enter the camp, a cinematic takes you to the commander’s tent. You are surprised to find Stentor, your stepbrother, leading the Spartan army here in Boeotia. He welcomes you with a punch to the face!
You announce, with papers in hand, that you have been sent by King Archidamos of Sparta to aid them in securing the region. You follow Stentor out of his tent and to a cliffside to talk.
Conversation with Stentor
Stentor asks why the king sent you. You can be antagonistic and answer “To steal your glory” or sarcastic and answer “I missed my brother” or stick to business and answer “I’ve come to help Sparta.” When Stentor asks why he should trust you, you can reply “You should be glad I’m here” or ask him a few interrogative questions, such as “What’s the situation?” and “Why are you here?” By prying, you learn that they seized Athens, but Kleon took power and pushed them out. Taking Boeotia will weaken Kleon’s position. You ask what you can do and he dreams up what he thinks is impossible and asks you to take out the four Boeotian champions fighting for Athens. You can reply “I’ll kill the champions for Sparta” or “Killing the champions won’t help.” No matter your choice, Stentor explains how it will help to have them gone. You can ask where you can find them, why they’re helping Athens, and what makes them so mighty. Select “I have what I need” to get started.
You now must defeat Athenian champions Aristaios, Deianeira, Nesaia, and Drakon in order to continue this quest. Four quests unlock, one for each champion that must be eliminated. The quests are The End of Drakon, The Fall of Deianeira, The Last Fight of Aristaios, and The Last Hunt of Nesaia. Completing these four quests will put closure to this one: The Conqueror. We’ll start with the one closest to Stentor’s camp: The Last Hunt of Nesaia.
The Last Hunt of Nesaia

- Prerequisite: Begin The Conqueror
- Unlocks: This is one of four quests that must be completed to finish The Conqueror quest and the Paint It Red quest line.
- Story: Nesaia, the legendary huntress of Boeotia, is marked. For the first time in her life, the hunter has become the hunted.
Find and Assassinate Nesaia
Boeotia: Oropos Heights
Stop at the Spartan military camp’s blacksmith (1) and work with your gear before traveling northeast to find Nesaia.
If you follow the road northeast out of the camp, you’ll be prompted to search for your target using Ikaros when you reach the Healing Sanctuary of Amphiaraos. You can target a clue (2) at a small grass hut in a clearing over a narrow wooden bridge. Investigate the clue (the door on the grass hut).
You learn that the hut must be Nesaia’s. While continuing to search for clues, watch out for the wildlife nearby. A large grizzly fights with wolves near the pond beside Nesaia’s camp. The next clue—non-human tracks leading away from camp—can be found on the trail that starts in the camp and heads toward the wildlife around the pond.
Don’t follow that lead yet. Turn around and find the clue near the blood trail leading away from the campfire behind the hut. You learn the fire is fresh and the food is still simmering. Nesaia is not far away.
Check your map to find a new search area that appeared to the northwest (3). Ride through the woods and send Ikaros up when prompted. You’ll find Nesaia fighting a few wolves. She and her hunting partner, a large grizzly, will be tough to sneak up on. Send some arrows into her from a distance and then move close and engage her. Defeat her and finish off the large grizzly and any other wildlife that has eyes on you now. Make sure to loot the many dead wolves that Nesaia defeated.
If you check the available quests after defeating Nesaia you’ll find your next closest target is Drakon, only 680 meters from your location. Select The End of Drakon for your next quest.
A Herculean Task
- Recommended Level: 40
- Prerequisite: Begin The Conqueror
- Unlocks: This is one of four quests that must be completed to finish The Conqueror quest and the Paint It Red quest line.
- Story: The Boeotian people used to say that Drakon was the descendant of Herakles. He would be a challenge worthy of a true mercenary.
Find and Assassinate Drakon
Boeotia: Cursed Land of Oedipous
If you haven’t been to Thebes yet, while moving between where you killed Nesaia and where you’re headed to kill Drakon, consider a slight detour to synchronize with Kadmeia (1) in Thebes and to pick up side quests. People there know Drakon very well. A side quest found there (The Stolen Steed) is a support quest for this one. Completing it adds flammable oil jars to Drakon’s training site.
Drakon is a tough adversary, but he’s not in a fort or surrounded by guards. He’s an easy target. Travel to his training grounds (2) and put some arrows in him to soften him up. Remove his shield and start fighting. A large heavy weapon is the way to go. He’s slow but powerful; you’ll have plenty of time to swing the heavy weapon and dodge his attacks. Defeat him and loot his body for materials and Drakon’s bracers. Next, check your map for the next closest target, which is in the quest The Last Fight of Aristaios.
The Last Fight of Aristaios
- Recommended Level: 40
- Prerequisite: Begin The Conqueror
- Unlocks: This is one of four quests that must be completed to finish The Conqueror quest and the Paint It Red quest line.
- Story: You have to face Aristaios, a skilled warrior and smart tactician. Despite his skill, his devotion to Boeotia was always going to get him killed.incredible cost.
Find and Assassinate Aristaios
Boeotia: Lake Kopais
Just north of Thebes you can reach the southeast shores (1) of Lake Kopais. You can find many small boats here. Sail to the small island with the Kopais Perch and synchronize there. If you have been following the save-everyone-in-the-family route then you’ll find your stepfather here. Nikolaos is killing your target in a clearing (2) in front of the military fort of Gla. He does the job for you. You don’t have to infiltrate that fort as you would if Nikolaos were dead now. However, after the conversation we suggest you clear it for the location objective XP. Use the tunnel on the southwestern shore (3) of the island for an alternative way into the fort.
Conversation with Nikolaos
You approach your stepfather after he beats you to the assassination, ending Aristaios before you can. He’s genuinely happy to see you. It seems he’s starting to find peace within himself. You can respond “I didn’t expect to find you here” or, to get a little information first, “What have you been doing?” He confesses that he’ll never be able to make up for what he’s done in the past, but he can fulfill a promise he made to Stentor right now. He knew killing your targets would weaken Athens. He’s helping Stentor…as you are. You can respond “You destroyed Stentor’s morale” or “I’m glad you’re helping.” To continue toward this guide’s happy family ending, do not destroy your possible friendship with this man. Select the second option and tell him you are glad Nikolaos is helping.
You congratulate him for helping Stentor (without sarcasm in your voice). He continues to be apologetic with you. You shovel a little extra guilt on him by reminding him that he wasn’t there for you while you grew up. And yes, this is still the happy path. He says he’s turning over a new leaf starting now with Stentor. He has a message for Stentor. You can respond “He doesn’t need you” or you can continue down this guide’s path and select the second option, “Go to him.” You send Nikolaos to speak to Stentor.
The conversation ends with our storyline intact. You, with an all-kidding-aside attitude, wish the best for Nikolaos’s and Stentor’s relationship before you walk away. Nikolaos leaves the prizes from the kill behind. Take Aristaios’s breastplate, drachmae, and materials from his corpse. You have one more target to go.
The Fall of Deianeira
- Recommended Level: 40
- Prerequisite: Begin The Conqueror
- Unlocks: This is one of four quests that must be completed to finish The Conqueror quest and the Paint It Red quest line.
- Story: As one of the champions of Boeotia, Deianeira is in your way and has to be dealt with.
Find and Assassinate Deianeira
Boeotia: Mount Helikon
The objective marker for this quest points you southwest to the Mount Helikon region. You’ve been around this area before. If you have synchronized with Standing Pillar (1) then fast-travel there now. If not, explore on horseback.
Before you enter the Cave of the Oracle (7) to find Deianeira’s hideout (after learning this from Timon in Sibling Revenge), it’s a good time to save Eppie (6) from the wolves and start his character quest A Life’s Dedication, in which he escorts you directly where you’re headed now—to the Cave of the Oracle. Once there, you can complete this quest and then deal with Eppie afterward.
Once inside the cave (7), find the hole behind the altar that everyone is facing and praying to. Run and slide under to fully explore the cave.
Cave of the Oracle Exploration
If you scanned the ground area around the cave (using Ikaros) before you entered it, the three treasures for the location objectives will be tracking on your screen. This is good. Navigation in this cave is simple—when you reach the first fork just know that to the left is Deianeira and to the right is where all the loot is. You need the stele piece from Eppie to unlock the door to the treasures. Do that later. Go left.
Cross a chamber with a watery floor and jump down the well at the end of the next tunnel. Loot the stuff on the bottom and pull up to continue through the tunnel. In the next cavern you find Deianeira sitting down alone next to a subterranean tree and a firepit. Her back is to you. Begin this fight (and possibly end it) with a stealthy assassination attempt.
After defeating her, confirm the kill to take her cultist goods, including her Amazon’s greaves (legplate). You take the etching on Deianeira’s legplate (cultist clue). If this is your last of the four targets to take out for Stentor, return to him now to complete the quest The Conqueror.
The Conqueror (Part II)
- Recommended Level: 38
- Prerequisite: Complete A Herculean Task, The Fall of Deianeira, The Last Fight of Aristaios, The Last Hunt of Nesaia
- Unlocks: Completing the quest lines The Olympian, Paint It Red, and The Cult and the Archon unlocks A Bloody Feast.
- Story: With the king’s edict in one hand and your spear in the other, you are tasked with conquering Boeotia for Sparta, making sure the Athenians don’t get there first.
Return to Stentor
Boeotia: The Scorched Rolling Plains
Travel to the battlefield in the scorched rolling plains and speak to Stentor (1), who’s planning the battle from his tent.
Conversation with Stentor
Stentor is surprised to see you returning from what he believed to be an impossible task. He thinks the gods are punishing him with you. You tell him the champions have been dealt with. You can say (without story-branching risks) either “No, the gods are helping you” or “There’s nothing godly about this.” Athens is weakened. “Sparta must take this region now,” Stentor says. Reply “Let’s go to war” if you’re ready to battle or “Not just yet” if you’d like to level up more or see the blacksmith.
Kill the Enemy Captain
The battle between Sparta and Athens to hold Boeotia begins. Single out high-ranking targets to drain the blue health bar at the top of the screen. Shield Breaker and Hero Strike are great abilities to use in large battles like this. Don’t forget you can always go to the bows between skirmishes.
Kill the Enemy Hero
The enemy hero is a mercenary, Petarios the Scarred. Be prepared; he is the biggest challenge in this battle. The fight is a balance between avoiding his fire bomb attacks and fending off lower-rank Athenians with shields. Every chance you get, remove the shield of a nearby enemy who will not go away. All the while keep fighting to raise adrenaline and releasing the big abilities on the enemy hero. After the mercenary’s demise, continue killing captains until the war ends in your favor. You get around 1,800 XP and other rewards.
Conversation with Stentor
Stentor is happy with the victory. Since you are trying to patch things up with him in this storyline, you can choose not to antagonize him. You can respond “Thanks to you” and really make him feel good or “You’re lucky I was here.” And this is where you take your little secret too far. He now digs at you for the murder of his father, Nikolaos. The argument flares up to the point that Stentor wants to fight you to the death.
To defuse the situation you can ask him a few light questions—“Why do you want to fight” and “What do you gain from this”—to give him pause. Select “Neither of us has to die” to try to explain to him that Nikolaos did not die.
Just before you guys fight, Nikolaos walks up and defuses the situation. Stentor can’t believe his eyes. Still not clear on how Nikolaos is standing there, he attacks you verbally one more time. You can respond “I did nothing” or “I’ve paid plenty.” Your choice. Nikolaos and Stentor have a bonding moment and you reveal that you found your mother ruling Naxos. He wishes you well and leaves.
This conversation ends the quest line. You can return to talk to the kings of Sparta in the quest line The Cultist King in the quest A Bloody Feast.
