The Synthesis specialty, unlocked through the early Happy Fun Bunny Time quest, allows a different kind of item creation. In standard item creation, a recipe’s result is only unknown the first time it’s attempted. After that, the same ingredients will always produce the same predictable result. Synthesis doesn’t work like that. When items are synthesized, between two and six items are fused into one, with somewhat unpredictable results.
When you’re arranging a synthesis, each fusion slot can be manually selected, or all slots can be automatically filled out with the Automatic Selection function. In either case, once several items are laid out for potential synthesis, a few pieces of information will help guide the decision to go through with it.
Under Result, the synthesis result’s broad type is listed: medicine, food, metal, natural material, signeturgy, or machine. Two other parameters here help guide the decision: quality and impurities. These are arbitrary measures of how well the selected combo of ingredients works out together, and they are the main factors beyond the Result category in determining the synthesis product. A final consideration is made for certain synthesis results that can only occur when particular items are included in the fusion.
Type: The item family of the result. Toggle between different items when preparing a synthesis to affect the type of the eventual product.
Quality: The overall level of value of the product, maxing out at 50. Quality will vary depending on the value of the items assembled for the synthesis.
Impurities: A measure of the amount of imperfections holding the result back from legendary status. Like quality, it also maxes out at 50. Like type and quality, impurities will vary depending on the items selected. When targeting particular item types and quality levels, be creative and patient exploring different item combinations.
Quality and impurity ratings determine the top of a reward’s possible range. A projected quality/impurities rating of 50, for example, does not guarantee a 50-value result. The table here illustrates the actual ranges for rewards from quality/impurity ratings.

In other words, whenever a synthesis is undertaken, the potential reward is pulled from a pool of items along the metrics of both quality and impurity. A synthesis of quality 50 and impurities 12 can result in a quality result ranging from 40 to 50, while at the same time, it could be an “impure” result of 0-12; in this case, an impurity 0 reward from a quality 50 synth attempt is possible.
The “ultimate” synths of each type thus require a maxed Synthesis Specialty level, some item juggling when deciding the fusion (ensuring a quality/impurity rating of 50, so the top end of the scale is as high as possible), including prerequisite items (if any), and crossing fingers. There’s simply some luck involved in shooting for high-level synthesis results.
The tables here show what results are possible when shooting for maxed 50-quality or 50-impurity spoils. These include many of the adventure’s most powerful and exclusive weapons, armor, and items.
