Welcome to the main story walkthrough for Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness. This guide focuses on taking you through the game’s primary missions while also indicating optional objectives on the way. Most optional tasks can be done at any point in the game. However, there are a few pieces of missable content (mainly Private Actions and role unlocks). This guide warns you at these points in the story so you don’t miss out.
Additionally, while combat strategy is highlighted for particularly difficult encounters, most in-depth battle tactics can be found in the Game Mechanics section of this book.
Optional Tasks
Side Quests
There are two types of side quests in Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness: bulletin board quests and the Welch line of quests. All of these quests can be completed at your leisure and are not missable. Generally, quests are unlocked depending on your progress in the main storyline.
A few bulletin board quests are unlocked after you complete prerequisite ones. If you follow this guide thoroughly and complete all of the side quests listed, this ensures the unlocking of subsequent ones. It’s important to note that many Specialty skills are obtained through completing these quests. Refer to the Side Quests section of this book for reward details as well as quest prerequisites.
The Welch line of quests is particularly important if you’re into crafting items, so make sure to undertake and complete these when you can (these are noted in the walkthrough at the earliest point you can pick them up).
Cathedral of Oblivion
During your adventure, you’ll come across distortion points that warp you to a mysterious establishment known as the Cathedral of Oblivion. These can be completed for bonus equipment and are noted throughout this walkthrough. You can obtain the chests in these dungeons at any point in the game, so don’t worry if you miss a few of them. If you like a good challenge, it’s recommended that you try your hand at these when you come across them. You can find enemy details and rewards in the Cathedral of Oblivion section within the Optional Tasks part of this book.
Private Actions and Affinity
As with most Star Ocean games, you can view Private Actions for additional insight into the game’s interesting characters. Triggered Private Actions are available whenever you see a “whistle” icon on the in-game map, with a designated area to start the Private Actions event. The maps in this walkthrough have these points listed, while the walkthrough itself notes when you can trigger them. Note that Private Actions are randomized (within a specific time period), so you may experience a different set of Private Actions than ones listed in this walkthrough. However, it’s possible to trigger all of them with enough adventuring.
Not only do you get to experience each character’s quirks and personality traits, but triggering Private Actions also affects a hidden affinity value between Fidel and his allies. This affinity value results in minor changes in the game’s cutscenes, particularly the ending, so keep this in mind if you’re exceptionally fond of one character over another. You might not want to trigger everyone’s Private Actions! You can find details about manipulating this value at the end of Chapter 12 (albeit with spoilers), so be warned!
Furthermore, there are random Private Actions that are triggered at certain points of a map. These differ from the aforementioned triggered ones because they can occur in almost any area of the game, and as the name suggests, they are generated randomly. The in-game map won’t show you these points, but the maps in this book will show the general vicinity where these random Private Actions can be triggered. Some of these random Private Actions will unlock normal Private Actions, so the more adventuring you do, the more likely you are to access normal Private Action events.
