Assassin's Creed III eGuide Side Quests

Clubs

Clubs are special organizations that offer optional missions for Connor to undertake, and an assortment of “Challenges”, separated into three successive tiers, which chart Connor’s progress and prowess in thematically appropriate disciplines. Completing each level of Challenges unlocks the next one in line.

Clubs become formally available from the start of Sequence 05, though there is also a small additional task that must be completed before Connor will be approached by a representative of some organizations. Once Connor receives an invitation to join, the first tier of Challenges for that club will be unlocked, and will appear within the Logbook. In a thoughtful move, practically all of Connor’s activities prior to an invitation to join a club will be recognized retroactively. The Hunting Society Challenges, for example, will note Connor’s hunting feats in Sequence 04.

Three of the four clubs also offer missions for Connor to undertake. Completing these will lead to the reward of Mementos that appear in the Homestead Manor, and count towards 100% Synchronization.

The Hunting Society

To receive an invitation to join the Hunting Society, you must have hunted and skinned at least one animal. A representative of the society will then approach Connor while he is travelling through the Frontier area. Note that this will not occur immediately at the start of Sequence 05: you may need to leave and return to the area to trigger the approach.

The first tier of Hunting Challenges is unlocked after the introductory conversation, and hunting cabins () appear in the Frontier: one in the northwest, the other in the south. You can visit either of these locations to accept missions (marked by the icon) that are completed in a linear progression.

Challenge Tips:

  • If you enjoy hunting, the Hunting Society Challenges are probably the quickest and least demanding route to the “In Good Standing” Achievement/Trophy, which is awarded for completing all three tiers of a single club’s Challenges. Hunting in the Frontier can be combined with side quests in the area. In addition, the process of picking up Collectibles, and the profits that Connor can make by selling animal products via convoys, can be remarkable.
  • The maps in the Collectibles section of this chapter feature annotations that indicate positions where particular varieties of animal are unusually abundant.
  • The “Kill 10 animals in close combat” Challenge refers to the process of neutralizing hostile bears, wolves, wild cats or elk in the timed button-press minigame that ensues when they attack.

The Man-Eater

Starts when you visit a hunting cabin in the Frontier for the first time

  • Go to the marked area, to the west of the Frontier. Follow the clues in the green search zone to find the bear cave across the river. Enter the cave and carry the corpse at the entrance into the middle of the lair. This will lure the bear out and enable you to kill it. If you engage it via close combat, you will need to follow more onscreen button prompts than usual to defeat the beast.

Unlocks the Bear Memento at the Manor.

Feline Feet

Complete The Man-Eater

  • Go to the marked area in the northwest of the Frontier and activate Eagle Vision to find the Unique Bobcat Tracks on the rocky area. Once it appears, chase it through the gorge and the cave, up to the top of the hill, where you must kill it. If you fail, you will need to restart. If you sprint towards the gorge before the animal starts to run, it’s possible to end the chase with a near-immediate kill.

Unlocks the Bobcat Memento at the Manor.

The Patriarch

Complete Feline Feet

  • In the marked area near Connor’s village, activate Eagle Vision to locate the deer as a golden target. As you have to get in close, hide in one of the Stalking Zones in the area, taking care not to scare the target away. Once concealed, throw some bait and wait until the deer comes close.

Unlocks the Deer Memento at the Manor.

The Pack Leader

Complete The Patriarch

  • Go to the marked area in the northwest of the Frontier and look for clues in the green search zone. You will have to kill three aggressive wolves to draw out their leader. If you approach them carefully, you can kill the wolves with your bow to prevent them from attacking you.

Unlocks the Wolf Memento at the Manor.

Acute Cat

Complete The Pack Leader

  • The marked area is in the north of the Frontier. To reach the path on top of a cliff, you will need to climb there from the west side ( 01). Follow the path until you reach a clearing, where the cougar awaits.

Unlocks the Cougar Memento at the Manor.

The Elk Bachelor

Complete Acute Cat

  • Go to the marked area in the Valley Forge region. There are many trees that you can use to make a careful approach, which will enable you to kill your target easily with an air assassination.

Unlocks the Elk Memento at the Manor.

The Frontiersmen

Unlike other clubs, the Frontiersman can be visited at any of their Frontier camps (marked by the icon) from the start of Sequence 05. You must begin the first Frontiersman mission to unlock this club’s Challenges, and can complete all available missions after the events of “Boston’s Most Wanted” in Sequence 05 (marked by the icon). The two final Frontiersmen missions take place in Boston: simply enter the highlighted taverns to find the start point.

Challenge Tips:

  • The “Reach five high points” task can be completed simply by synchronizing with Viewpoints.
  • The “Dive into water from a height of 50 meters” objective is met by fulfilling the final Optional Objective of the Sequence 06 closing Memory, Hostile Negotiations. If you should miss this, there is another easy way. From the Homestead area transition in the northeast of the map, simply follow the path until you see a fallen tree jutting over the side of the cliff. From here, dive into the water to the left.
  • The conversations with Washington that are required to complete the Tier 2 objective occur at very specific junctures. The first of these take place during “Missing Supplies” in Sequence 09, and can be obtained during a Memory Replay if you didn’t see them on your first playthrough. After the introductory cutscene, follow Washington and talk to him; this triggers a cutscene outside the house of Isaac Potts. Once this ends, walk with Washington and continue the conversation until he has no new lines to speak. As an aside, this is also a good time to speak with Lafayette if you missed him earlier. The final conversation with Washington takes place after the completion of the main storyline. To find him, travel to Bowling Green on the southwest side of New York: Washington is marked by a “” icon. Initiate a conversation to complete the Challenge.
  • The third-tier objectives that challenge you to fully reveal the Boston, Frontier and New York maps require that you activate all possible Viewpoints and uncover the remaining areas within the Desynchronization boundary. Note that the area “unfogged” as Connor explores is expanded if he is moving at a higher elevation, such as tree-based free run courses and over rooftops.

Unidentified Flying Object

Complete The Boy Who Cried Wolf and talk to the Frontiersmen group in one of the marked Taverns in Boston

  • Go to the marked area in the southwest of Boston, activate Eagle Vision and scrutinize the trees. An umbrella is stuck in one of the branches. In order to reach it, climb the toilet hut and jump on the nearest branch; from there, leap through the trees until you reach the umbrella ( 02).

The Boston Brawlers

A representative of the Boston Brawlers will approach Connor after he has beaten up an adversary with his fists alone at any point after the start of Sequence 05. This unlocks the first tier of Challenges. The first mission (marked by the icon) becomes available after “Boston’s Most Wanted” in Sequence 05, but those that follow cannot be undertaken until Connor returns to New York after completing “Missing Supplies” at the start of Sequence 09.

Challenge Tips:

  • Killing opponents disabled by a Smoke Bomb is most easily achieved by approaching a sizable group of enemies while incognito: any large patrol will suffice. Drop the device in their midst, and you can then assassinate numerous targets in succession with the Hidden Blade before the cloud dissipates.
  • The “Kill an enemy with every type of weapon” task refers to categories of weapons – not each and every sword, for example – and
  • includes ranged weapons. You will need to use the Hidden Blade, a small weapon (such as the Tomahawk, a normal weapon (a sword), a heavy weapon (an axe), a musket, a blunt weapon (club), a pistol, the bow, a Poison Dart, a Rope Dart and a Trip Mine.
  • The Kill Streak challenges are easiest to accomplish against large groups of the Soldier archetype without the added complication of stronger archetypes. Patrols of this kind are rather common in the north of Boston.
  • For the Jäger-related task, visit Boston and cause chaos until Connor is at maximum Notoriety. You should then hunt these super-soldiers down one by one as they roam the streets; try to avoid those close to other patrols. When each battle begins, ensure that Connor is unarmed, and use the Counter Disarm move to steal the Jäger’s weapon. Launch into an immediate combo while they are defenseless to kill them. Repeat this process a further nine times, and you will complete both the Challenge and Achievement/Trophy at once.

Peter Bunyon

Complete “Boston’s Most Wanted” in Sequence 05, then meet with Harold Ring at the Old Brewery in Boston

  • Once you reach Peter Bunyon in the Frontier (Troy’s Wood region), quickly dispatch his associates with Counter Kills. Bunyon himself is immune to Counter Kills. Use the Counter Disarm or Counter Throw moves when he attacks, and follow up with combos.

The Sailor

Defeat Peter Bunyon; complete “Missing Supplies” at the start of Sequence 09

  • The Sailor awaits in New York, on a ship on the west side of the city. Defeat his three friends immediately, then focus on your main target. The Sailor blocks normal attacks and you cannot break his defense. Use the Counter Disarm move and follow up with punches until he falls.

The Smuggler

Defeat The Sailor

  • The Smuggler is found in Boston, in the northern part of the Central District. After you defeated his three allies and dealt some damage to him, another Smuggler appears along with reinforcements. Neither Smuggler can be Counter Killed, but they’re susceptible to Counter Disarm and Counter Throw, followed up with punch combos, as usual.

The Stinger

Defeat The Smuggler

  • You will find The Stinger in the Frontier, in the Diamond Basin region. Dispatch the weaker enemies before you take care of The Stinger. He blocks normal attacks and you cannot break his defense, so use Counter Disarm followed by punch combos to wear him down.

The Ropebeater

Defeat The Stinger

  • The Ropebeater is found in the eastern part of Boston. Incapacitate his three allies immediately. The only way to defeat The Ropebeater is to stand next to a table or a barrel and Counter Throw him into one of these obstacles. Repeat this until he falls.

The Merchant

Defeat The Ropebeater

  • You will find The Merchant in the northeast of New York. Quickly eliminate his allies, then use the Counter Throw or Break Defense moves followed by volleys of punches to defeat him.

The Tournament

Defeat The Merchant

  • Return to the Old Brewery in Boston. You will have to fight four groups, each consisting of four members (three weaklings, one resolute and hardy leader). Never get too close to the crowd surrounding Connor, or they will strike him. Each leader offers a unique challenge, though they are all susceptible to the same moves (Disarm and Break Defense).
  • ■The Redcoat is strong. Defeat him with Counter Disarms followed by punches, even after he unsheathes a sword.
  • ■The Docker will fight you in a small arena, forcing you to pay attention to the crowd.
  • ■Against The Surgeon, Connor's vision is blurred and it is harder to see enemies.
  • ■Against The Huntress, other women from the crowd will throw Smoke Bombs. When you see one of them starting to run towards you, move away so that you don’t get caught in the smoke.

The Thief’s Club

A representative of this shadowy syndicate will approach Connor after he has pickpocketed more than £100 in funds.

Challenge Tips:

  • Pickpocketing guards isn’t as hard as it sounds. The safest way is to find a position where Connor can perform the lift while Blending, but you can also brazenly lock step with a patrol and pilfer from the soldiers at the rear. Identifying a rich citizen for the second-tier Challenge is usually a matter of finding a civilian in dandy attire (look for long socks and britches) wearing a distinctive tricorne (three-pointed) hat. These must be pickpocketed three or even four times to obtain all of their items.
  • If you can’t find a guard dog for the related second-tier Challenge in later Sequences, replay the first Memory of Sequence 10, “Alternate Methods”. You will encounter an appropriate hound early in the mission.
  • The £1,500 benchmark for the third-tier challenge can be completed with relative ease if you regularly loot fallen opponents to replenish ammunition after combat.
