The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Guide › Walkthrough › Great Explorations, Part I

Hyrule Field

Now that Link has cleared the Eastern Palace and learned to merge into walls, he can undertake a vast number of activities around Hyrule. Follow along carefully, and our hero will be ready to take on anything by the time he enters the House of Gales and Tower of Hera!

Castle of Doom

Hyrule Castle is teeming with enemy soldiers at this point, making it a dangerous place to linger. Sprint south as soon as Sahasrahla departs to escape the soldiers’ wrath before things get out of hand.

Color-Coded Soldiers

The color of each enemy soldier indicates its toughness. Green soldiers are the weakest, blue soldiers can take more damage, and gray and red soldiers are the toughest, able to withstand significant punishment before falling.

Sword Soldier

Damage:1/2 Heart

Sword Soldiers are similar to Short Sword Soldiers, except that their longer blades allow for both offense and defense. Use the bow to take them out from a safe range, or try to strike around their long swords. The former is much easier.

Bow Soldier

Damage:1/2 Heart

Bow Soldiers fire arrows at Link from afar. They’re also quick to back away from Link, preventing him from defeating them easily with his sword. Block their arrows with the shield and give them a taste of their own medicine by firing arrows back at them.

Spear Soldier

Damage:1/2 Heart

Spear Soldiers have the longest weapons of all, making them the most dangerous to battle up close. Keep your distance and use the bow to pick them off from afar.

Throwing Spear Soldier

Damage:1/2 Heart

Some soldiers throw their spears at Link, making them dangerous at any range. Block or dodge their spears, then counter with the bow or sword.

Bomb Soldier

Damage:1 Heart

These explosive foes hurl bombs at Link from range. Luckily, they’re only found atop Hyrule Castle’s ramparts. Unluckily, this gives them a perfect vantage to rain down bombs on our hero. Keep well away from the castle until you have the means to deal with these enemies.

Soldiers Are Everywhere!

There are now enemy soldiers all over Hyrule—not just around the castle. Some even emerge from tall grass and bushes when you cut them down! Be on your guard at all times, hero.

Gulley’s Still Gone

Head west after crossing the Hyrule Castle bridge, heading toward the Blacksmith. You’ll see the Blacksmith’s Wife walking around on your way, calling out for Gulley. Link’s young friend is still missing. You should check up on him.

Heart on High

Go east to reach the Blacksmith. Notice the piece of heart on the high ledge behind the Blacksmith’s forge. To reach it, approach the front of the Blacksmith’s shop and merge into the building’s wall, then slip around the back.

Presto! Pop out of the wall and claim your second piece of heart.

Piece of Heart #2

A Meeting with Irene

Before you head south to search Gulley’s favorite woods, go north, heading past the Blacksmith and toward the Miner’s House. You’re paid a visit by a friendly flying witch named Irene along the way. Irene is actually the Witch’s granddaughter, and she gives you a bell that you can ring anytime to have Irene appear. The good witch will then give you a ride to any weather vane you’ve activated around Hyrule. Talk about fast travel!

Bell

You got the bell! Now you can call Irene anytime!

Working With Witches

Now that you can call on Irene, you can easily refill Link’s hearts at any time. Simply have Irene deliver you to her gram’s place (the Witch’s House), then go inside and speak with the Witch. Tell her “Just a hello,” and the Witch will give you a free taste from her cauldron, restoring all of Link’s hearts. Good stuff!

Get the Glove

Continue moving north, heading for the Miner’s House. (It’s north of the Blacksmith.) When you get there, you see that rocks have fallen all over the place, smashing the house’s roof. Better see if everyone inside is alright!

Inside the Miner’s House, Link finds a burly man named Rosso heaving rocks this way and that. Rosso is steaming that his house has been smashed by the recent earthquake, and feels sorry that Link can’t relieve stress by tossing around rocks like he can. Rosso therefore gives Link the Power Glove, which gives our hero the strength to lift small rocks.

Power Glove

A glove that makes you feel strong! Pick up small rocks by pressing .

Playing with Power

Rosso was kind enough to part with the Power Glove, so why not do him a favor? Help clean up Rosso’s yard by lifting and tossing every small rock around his house.

Throw and smash every rock around Rosso’s house, and the kind miner will invite you inside to thank you. Head inside to find a treasure chest that contains a Purple Rupee. What a pal!

Hyrule Chest #9: Purple Rupee

Tool Time

Let’s try out your new bell, shall we? Tap the bell button at the bottom of the Touch Screen, then select Link’s House as your destination. Irene arrives and whisks you away to Link’s House. How convenient! Save your game and then head inside to speak with Ravio.

Ravio's Shop Closed?

If Ravio's shop isn't opening for you, jump ahead to the Zora's Domain section and follow it until you obtain the Zora's Flippers. Once you've become an honorary Zora, Ravio's shop is sure to open!

Whoa! Ravio’s been busy! Now that you’ve found the Power Glove, the industrious bunny has transformed Link’s humble abode into an impressive item shop, with all sorts of tools and gear on display. This is Ravio’s rental house now, and he’ll gladly rent you any of his items for a small sum of Rupees.

If you have plenty of Rupees on hand, go ahead and rent as many items as you like from Ravio. Just like the bow, Ravio lets Link keep these items until our hero falls in battle. Should that ever occur, Ravio’s pal Sheerow will swoop in and collect his property. Still, you can always rent from Ravio again!

Rent, Rent, Rent!

For the purposes of this walkthrough, make sure to rent the bombs, hammer, Hookshot, and Tornado Rod. All other items are optional at present, but feel free to rent all of Ravio’s items if you can afford them—they’re all quite useful. (The Ice Rod is particularly effective at stunning powerful enemies.) The only item you can’t rent is the Sand Rod—if you recall, Osfala had it when he foolishly pursued Yuga into the Eastern Palace! Perhaps by saving Osfala, you’ll be able to rent the Sand Rod, too.

Rented Bombs

Use these with caution! You’ll get hurt if you’re caught in the blast! Cost: 30 Rupees.

Rented Boomerang

Returns when you throw it. It can also hit switches and stun enemies on the way! Cost: 30 Rupees.

Rented Fire Rod

Handle with care! Attack enemies with a burst of flame! Cost: 60 Rupees.

Rented Hammer

Bang down any pegs that block your way! Enemies too—wham! Cost: 30 Rupees.

Rented Hookshot

Hooks onto anything made of wood. Can help you travel across treacherous gaps. Cost: 30 Rupees.

Rented Ice Rod

If you wave it, you can freeze all sorts of things. Cost: 60 Rupees.

Rented Tornado Rod

Fly up and hover in the air! Also gives nearby foes a whirl! Cost: 30 Rupees.
