World of Final Fantasy Guide › Introduction: Forever Fantasy

Foreword

With hindsight comes clarity.

Final Fantasy is one of video gaming’s longest-lasting series, and it has played a significant part in defining an entire gaming genre. For decades it has entertained and enthralled audiences with a mix of iconic characters, cutting-edge visuals, unforgettable stories, and innovative battle systems.

World of Final Fantasy releases on the cusp of Final Fantasy’s 30th anniversary, as well as its 15th mainline installment, so retrospective is only appropriate. Fortunately, that’s what World of Final Fantasy does in spades. It’s the high-budget look back that a series like this deserves. It reflects on the past and looks to the future.

Newcomers and children will be treated to an accessible gateway to one of the most beloved video game series of all time. Meanwhile, series veterans will find nostalgia in spades, as well as a game that’s willing to enjoy itself and its lore—and in many places, even enhance it.

With the above in mind, this guide has been crafted to make sure you experience it all. Enjoy the story, enjoy the jokes, enjoy the battles, enjoy the thrill of collecting and organizing Mirages in order to overcome all of the challenges that await.

But, most of all, enjoy yourselves. That’s what this game wants you to do more than anything.

It All Started with the End of the World

Twin siblings, Lann and Reynn, awaken without their memories.

The only clues they have to who they once were are the mysterious marks on their arms, and they’re quickly informed that these marks allow them to take up the mantle of Mirage Keepers.

As Mirage Keepers, the two can control powerful living illusions of creatures. Reportedly, this won’t be their first go at the whole Keeper gig, either. They once were such powerful Mirage Keepers that they could have ruled the whole world through the combined power of the Mirages they commanded.

But, wait a minute: which world? It turns out that there are several, including one—Nine Wood Hills—that’s been spliced away from all others, as well as from the regular flow of time.

Their mysterious informant, Enna Kros, leads them to a gate to Grymoire. Grymoire is a world filled with the Mirages that Reynn and Lann lost, as well as a world filled with healthy memories of the two—memories that the siblings still lack.

Their mission is stated: if they can recruit as many Mirages as possible, they’ll learn about their past and their family.

Along the way, they’ll meet several allies and enemies, some of who may be familiar to the hands guiding the twins on their journey…

What You’ve Just Signed Up For

World of Final Fantasy is a Japanese role-playing game that blends both traditional genre conventions and new ideas. You’ll play as twin siblings Lann and Reynn in search of their lost memories as they journey through a world filled with magic and creatures.

Along the way, you’ll meet a colorful cast of characters, both old and new. You’ll recruit classic Final Fantasy personas, as well as several new faces, into your team of heroes. You’ll experience animated cutscenes and narrative twists, and take part in intense turn-based battles.

Prepare for a long and epic journey through a series’ history. In the end, you just might gain a newfound appreciation for several old friends.
