Gear can be just as important as your abilities. The proper items can vault you from normal soldier to tweaked-out death-dealer.
Concentrate on grabbing items that beef up your PC's main stats, and leave the other items to help out your followers' classes. A mage, for example, might want a little extra magic and willpower from an item, but doesn't care about strength.
