Fail Conditions

  • Phelps or Earle dies.
  • Candy spots you or lose the tail.

Location: American Legion Stadium

Investigate the locker room.

After Phelps kicks in the locker room door, search the room. Earle explains that you need to find Hammond before he gets “clipped” for breaking his deal. Open Hammond’s locker, the second one over from the pin board. Examine the pad of paper with Bookmakers’ Odds and a telephone number jotted on it. There’s a newspaper on one of the training tables that you might find interesting, too.

Exit the locker room to trigger a cut-scene: Mickey Cohen, the kingpin himself, is in the hall putting heat on Hammond’s manager, Arquero. You see that Cohen and Detective Earle are well acquainted. Phelps demands that Cohen keep his men away from Hammond or else.

Call KGPL to trace the phone number.

Follow the hallway and use the phone near the exit door. Phelps gets an address for the phone number he found in Hammond’s locker: it’s the Hotel El Mar in Hollywood. Now return to your car and head for this new location.

Key Clue Checklist: American Legion Stadium
  • Bookmakers’ odds

Location: Hotel El Mar

Find Hammond’s room.

Travel to the Hotel El Mar . Enter and approach the deskman to trigger a cut-scene: He says nobody named Hammond is at the hotel, but then it’s not the sort of place where people use real names. He gives you the hotel register to check. Open it and take Earle’s advice: Look for prominent Englishmen. Select the guest entry for “Winston Churchill” in Room 207. Then head upstairs to the second floor and find 207, just opposite the stairs.

Search the room.

Enter Room 207 via the unlocked door and pluck the copy of the Western Union Telegram from the refuse dumped on the floor from the tipped-over trashcan. It suggests that Albert Hammond is on his way home to England.

Inspect the dresser top to find the Movie Ticket Stub and some chocolates in a heart-shaped box, which indicates Hammond has a female companion. Then move to the table and examine the magazine. Scan the close-up and select (i.e., tap Phelps’ finger on) the Magazine Coupon to pick up a new P.O.I., Candy Edwards, and get her address. Could this be Hammond’s love interest?

Finally, pick up the sheet of paper listing the Bookmakers’ Payouts from the nightstand on the left side of the bed. Looks like Hammond stood to make a killing by betting the long odds on himself and then winning the fight. Now you can exit the hotel and go to the Candy Edwards address listed in the magazine coupon. It happens to be the Aleve Motel.

Key Clue Checklist: Hotel El Mar
  • Telegram
  • Movie ticket stub
  • Magazine Coupon
  • Bookmakers’ payouts

Location: Aleve Motel

Find Candy’s room.

Travel to the Aleve Motel and enter the motel office to trigger a cut-scene: when Phelps asks about Candy Edwards, the blasé desk clerk sends the detectives up to apartment 7 via the outside staircase. She also mentions that some sleazy guy named Carlo was looking for Candy, too. Exit the office and go upstairs to apartment 7.

Knock out Carlo.

As you approach the door, you hear Carlo Arquero yelling at somebody. When Phelps kicks the door open, you see Carlo punching a blonde woman in the face. K.O. the goon!

After knocking out Carlo, examine his unconscious body. You find a switchblade in his left breast pocket and a list of bookmakers in his right breast pocket—some of the names match up with Hammond’s list.

Then go to the vanity dresser and examine the one-way Bus Ticket to Akron, Ohio, and the card for the transoceanic passenger ship Cunard Ascania—which, as Phelps points out, sails from New York.

Key Clue Checklist: Aleve Motel (Candy’s Room)
  • Bus ticket
  • Cunard Ascania
Interview Candy Edwards.

After close inspection of the key clues, a cut-scene is triggered: Miss Edwards awakens and Phelps helps her to the chair. She agrees to answer some questions.

Interview: Candy Edwards

Topic: Whereabouts of Hammond

When Phelps asks where Albert Hammond might be, Candy claims their relationship is over, and she hasn’t seen him. Watch her face. She may be a tough cookie, but she doesn’t lie very convincingly. More importantly, you have a piece of physical evidence that undercuts her claim.

Correct Assessment: Accuse
Evidence: Magazine coupon

Candy admits she was in his room, but claims she left him before the fight because of his refusal to take a dive. This is plausible, so Phelps can’t push the point further.

Topic: List of odds recovered

Phelps asks about the bookmakers’ names (Harry, Mervin, Ray) on the list. Candy denies knowing them.

Correct Assessment: Accuse
Evidence: Bookmakers’ odds

When Phelps asks Candy for the betting slips, she suggests that Albert played dumb in order to make a killing and expresses amazement that Albert could “beat ‘em all”.

Topic: Plans to leave town

Phelps asks if Candy is leaving town, and she replies that she’s going straight home to Akron. Her smile is a bit too smug, and she doesn’t seem like the kind of girl to run home to Ohio.

Correct Assessment: Bad Cop

Phelps gets tough and so does Earle, but Candy won’t crack. She’s tough, all right.

After the interview, the detectives run Carlo Arquero out of the room. Outside, Earle expresses amazement that Candy isn’t running for the train station, considering all the dangerous types who probably think she’s a partner in Hammond’s scheme. Earle smells a payoff, and suggests you stake out Candy to see where she goes.

Tail Candy Edwards.

The scene shifts to the next morning, with Phelps and Earle patiently waiting in their car, parked near the Aleve Motel. Soon Candy emerges from her room with a big red suitcase and starts walking. Phelps tails her on foot while Earle follows with the car.

Phelps automatically sits on the nearby bench and picks up a newspaper to “go incognito”. Wait until Candy rounds the corner of the motel building and reaches the parking lot, then begin your pursuit. Maintain a safe distance, and stay in cover as much as possible! Candy will stop and look around a number of times. If you’re out in the open, she’ll spot you and you get the “Case Failed: Suspect Discovered You” screen.

Hide behind cars, trees, building corners, fences, and so forth. You can also go incognito at telephone booths, sitting on shoeshine stands, or at window displays. Keep an eye on the red blip on your mini-map that marks Candy’s location. If it starts to flash, you’re either too close or she’s getting too far away.

Eventually, Candy zigzags through the side streets of a residential area and veers down an alley past a Fireproof Warehouse sign—the alley leads out to Santa Monica Boulevard. When you reach the street, a cut-scene plays: Candy enters Thrifty Liquor as your partner, Earle, pulls up in the car.

Location: Thrifty Liquor

Investigate the first bookmaker’s office.

Get out of the car and enter Thrifty Liquor to find no liquor whatsoever, but rather a busy bookmaker’s business. This shop is run by Harry, the first name on the list of bookies you found in Hammond’s locker. Your entrance triggers a cut-scene: Harry says Candy ducked out the back after cleaning him out with her $3,600 in winnings. But before she left she made a phone call and wrote something on the notepad.

Approach the phone to bring up the notepad screen, then follow the onscreen instructions to lightly shade areas of the Bookie’s Notepad. This reveals the note that Candy jotted on the pad just minutes earlier: Examiner Drugstore, plus its address on Ivar Avenue in Hollywood.

Key Clue Checklist: Thrifty Liquor
  • Bookie’s notepad

Location: Examiner Drugstore

Investigate the second bookmaker’s office.

Travel to the Examiner Drugstore . En route you get a call from KGPL with a list of all known bookmakers operating out of storefronts in the Hollywood area. You already know about the first two, Thrifty Liquor and the Examiner Drugstore; the third one is at Mac’s Spirits on North Cherokee and gets added to your location list as “Ray’s Bookmakers”. Ray is the third name on Hammond’s list of bookies.

When you reach the Examiner Drugstore, enter to trigger a cut-scene. The proprietor, Mervin—the second name on Hammond’s list of bookies—has a voice for the ages, doesn’t he? He says Candy took him for “four thousand clams and change” and just left via taxi. To call the cab, she consulted a card Mervin keeps by his phone.

Go to Mervin’s phone and pick up the Yellow Cab Co. Card. Then use the phone: Phelps gets connected to Yellow Cab and picks up the cab number of the vehicle dispatched to pick up Candy at the Ivar Avenue address: 179.

Now go back to Mervin and talk to him. He verifies that Ray runs a bookie shop on North Cherokee, just south of Hollywood Boulevard. Return to your car.

Key Clue Checklist: Examiner Drugstore
  • Yellow Cab Co. card

Location: Ray’s Bookmakers

Investigate the third bookmaker’s office.

Travel to Ray’s Bookmakers . Your arrival triggers a cut-scene: Yellow Cab 179 is parked out front, waiting. Phelps and Earle decide to tail the cab. Candy soon exits the office and hops back in her taxi.

Tail Yellow Cab 179.

Follow the cab as it zigzags around town and takes a very circuitous route to its destination. Remain at a safe distance and drive carefully. Remember that the target cab is marked as a red blip on your mini-map, so you can keep tabs even if it turns out of your sight.

When the taxi finally stops to drop off the passenger, it’s at the Interstate Bus Depot , just a few blocks from where you started at Ray’s bookie shop!

Location: Interstate Bus Depot

Tail Candy across the depot.

Inside the depot, Earle spots Hammond and starts tailing him while you follow Candy. After regaining control, go directly forward to the bench with the newspaper and pick it up. Phelps sits and holds up the paper to go incognito. Wait until Candy enters the ladies room to your left, then approach the door. You hear Candy scream and then a gunshot!

Reaching the door triggers a cut-scene: Phelps enters to find Candy in a stall. The red suitcase is gone. When Earle arrives, he assumes Hammond is the perpetrator of this deed. But Phelps isn’t so sure.

Search the crime scene.

Before you go, search the stall. Examine the Revolver on the ground to view its chamber: .32 caliber, one shot fired. More importantly, pick up Candy’s purse and open it. Examine the Movie Ticket to add the Egyptian Theatre location and address on Hollywood Boulevard. Now you’ve got a new place to visit. As Phelps says, “Not much else to go on”.

Key Clue Checklist: Interstate Bus Depot
  • Revolver
  • Movie ticket

Location: Egyptian Theatre

Investigate the theatre.

Travel to the Egyptian Theatre . Your arrival triggers a cut-scene: a radio call from KGPL reports a message from the coroner. The revolver you found in the bus depot stall belonged to the victim. The cause of Candy Edwards’ death wasn’t a bullet, but a knife wound! And that fact points a finger squarely at Carlo Arquero. Now enter the theatre.

Step inside and you hear the voices of Albert Hammond and Carlo Arquero. Listen to the conversation, especially Carlo’s incriminating statements. Up in a box seat, Carlo takes a few wild shots in the direction of Hammond’s voice and shadow.

Take out Arquero and his men.

Phelps and Earle make their move, and the gunfight begins. Shoot at Arquero until he runs from the high box on the left, and then start gunning down the goons who enter at the front of the theater, including one armed with a Tommy gun. (Check those red blips on the mini-map!) Another goon opens fire from the box on the right, too. Take them all out, then nail Arquero when he enters the main floor.

When Arquero drops, you’ve completed the case. Watch the final movie to see what happens to Albert Hammond, the guy who wouldn’t take a dive.
