This case lets you conduct your first full-scale investigation, including witness/suspect interrogations. Officer Phelps hears gunshots as he walks his beat down Grand Avenue across 7th Street. He sprints around the corner to the scene of a shooting outside the Nunn Bush Shoes store. A patrol car pulls up and Phelps’ partner, Ralph Dunn, hops out. He tells Phelps to take charge as first reporting officer, then goes off to set up a perimeter around the crime scene.

Location: Nunn Bush Shoes
Search the body.
You begin on the sidewalk in front of the shoe store 
with the first clue already listed on the Evidence page of your notebook: “Shooting”. Phelps automatically stands over the victim, ready to examine the body. Make sure Phelps’ hand is pointing at the left breast pocket of the victim’s suit jacket. (It’s on your right as you face the dead man.) Then press the Examine button to open the suit and pull a Layaway Voucher from the inside pocket. Scroll down the voucher to examine it fully and add “Layaway voucher” to your notebook in two places: the Clues page and the Evidence list that you use when interviewing a subject.
The layaway voucher shows a series of payments made to Bank of Arcadia by someone named “C. Galletta” on a pair of pearl earrings.
Find the bullet casings.
After examining the victim, walk toward the curb—you should see a glint on the ground (circled in our screenshot). When you hear the chime, examine one of the five .32 Shell Casings scattered on the sidewalk. An onscreen notification states that they’ve been added as a New Clue to your notebook.
Find the handgun.
Now walk over to the trashcan next to where Officer Tate holds back the crowd. When you hear the chime, examine the trashcan to find a handgun. Be sure to examine the gun closely to see it’s an FN Browning Handgun, serial number 01138.
Phelps mentions he should run it by a gun store. Dunn remarks that Eagleson’s is just a couple of blocks away. This adds “Eagleson’s Gun Store” to your locations list.
Talk to the witness.
Now walk toward the onlookers at the opposite end of the sidewalk. Approach the fellow in the orange shirt to trigger a quick cut-scene. The witness reports that he heard gunshots and saw a girl run into the shoe store.
(Note that if you try to enter the store to interrogate the girl before finding all three of the key clues, Officer Dunn says, “We should make sure we’ve combed the whole crime scene before questioning the witness”.)
Interview the incident eyewitness.
Walk into Nunn Bush Shoes and approach the young female clerk to trigger a cut-scene that opens your interview with her. Her name is Clovis Galletta, 27, and the shooting victim was her boss, Everett Gage. This adds both to your P.O.I. page—it also automatically brings up the Questions page of your notebook.
In L.A. Noire, you conduct interviews using your notebook. All topics for questioning are listed on the right-hand page. Move your pencil to the topic you want to discuss and then select it to trigger a question. In this case, you have only one topic listed so far: “Eyewitness account”. Select it to trigger Phelps’ first question.

Interview: Clovis Galletta
Topic: Eyewitness account
Phelps asks Miss Galletta what happened. She describes how her boss accosted her in another store during her lunch break, accusing her of being late. Then as she walked ahead of him back to Nunn Bush Shoes, she heard shots behind her and saw Mr. Gage fall. And that’s it.
Now watch her demeanor for a few seconds: Miss Galletta looks uncomfortable. She swallows, licks her lips, and glances evasively from side to side.
In this case, she’s lying… and because the Patrol cases are tutorial missions, the game tells you onscreen to select Accuse as your response. But keep in mind that you must have evidence to support any accusation of lying. If you don’t, you let the subject off the hook—you “fail” that question and may lose out on key information, or cut off other lines of questioning.
For example, if you select Bad Cop here, you merely infuriate Miss Galletta and she clams up, refusing to speak further to Phelps. (Note: Despite this setback, you can still solve this particular case by tracing the gun clue.)
But if you’ve been following our walkthrough, you have the evidence you need. Select Accuse.
Correct Assessment: Accuse
Evidence: Layaway voucher
Officer Phelps presses Miss Galletta, who responds indignantly and challenges him to “prove different”. This automatically brings up the Evidence page of your notebook. Right now you have four pieces of evidence. Select the “Layaway voucher”. Amazingly, it seems the woman is holding back information because she’s afraid she’ll lose the pearl earrings she has on layaway!
Now Phelps turns up the heat, so Miss Galletta admits that Edgar Kalou, the man who owns the jewelry store, got into a loud argument with Gage. This adds the Jewelry Store as a new location and Edgar Kalou as a new P.O.I. in your notebook. (Again, if you fail this question you can still acquire Kalou’s information later at the gun store.) Then she re-describes the shooting. When she finishes, two new topics are added to your Questions page.
Topic: Possible Murder Suspect
This topic is added upon successfully completing the first topic, “Eyewitness account”. Miss Galletta provides the location of the jewelry store, Hartfield’s. She also verifies that Kalou was indeed, the shooter. But once again she appears nervous—lowering her gaze when she makes eye contact with Phelps, then glancing side to side.
If you accept her answer as the full story and select Good Cop, you won’t get a plausible motive for the murder. But again, as this is a tutorial case, the game offers the correct answer in an onscreen message.
Correct Assessment: Bad Cop
Phelps keeps up the pressure, demanding a reason for the shooting. And Clovis obliges by providing a Possible Religious Motive: Gage hated Jews, and Kalou is Jewish. This suggests that Gage’s critique of Kalou’s merchandise as shoddy was fueled by bigotry and perhaps triggered Kalou’s violent reaction.
Topic: Details of shooting
This topic is added if you successfully completed the first topic, “Eyewitness account”. Phelps asks how many gunshots Miss Galletta heard. She struggles to remember at first, but looks directly at Phelps several times and speaks with what seems like honest emotion.
Correct Assessment: Good Cop
Phelps gently urges her to concentrate. Eventually, she recalls five shots, which matches the number of .32-caliber shell casings you found out on the sidewalk. The interview ends with Officer Phelps thanking Miss Galletta for her bravery; she agrees to make a formal statement of testimony. When Phelps steps outside, he has a brief conversation with his partner Dunn and a new objective appears: “Investigate Hartfield’s Jewelry”.

Investigate the gun store.
Miss Galletta’s interview gives you all the reason you need to seek Edgar Kalou at Hartfield’s Jewelry. But if you want an ironclad case, set Eagleson’s Gun Store as your current destination and follow the yellow map flag to the location 
. Enter and approach the counter to trigger a conversation with the owner, a fellow named Fickman.
Fickman explains that the FN Browning handgun is a European favorite rarely seen in the States. He doesn’t sell the model, but cleaned one a couple weeks ago. The owner, he recalls, is one Edgar Kalou. Fickman remembers that Kalou works at Hartfield’s, the jewelry store up on Broadway.
If you don’t already have this information from the Clovis Galletta interview, it is now added to your notebook. It’s time to apprehend Mr. Edgar Kalou.

Set Hartfield’s Jewelry as your current destination and follow the yellow map flag to the location 
. When you arrive, a new objective appears onscreen.
Question Edgar Kalou.
Enter the store and approach the man at the counter to trigger a cut-scene: Phelps asks him if he’s Edgar Kalou. The man says Mr. Kalou is resting out back. He offers to buzz him for you and walks toward the rear of the store. Then he starts running—he’s actually Kalou! Sprint at the counter to leap over it and give chase.
Apprehend Edgar Kalou.
Kalou exits the building and turns right, following the alley out back. Stay as close as possible. Remember that you can track Kalou (the red blip) on your radar mini-map.
If you aim your weapon at Kalou during pursuit, a small circular gauge appears onscreen over the fleeing suspect. The gauge starts to fill up and continues to do so as long as your targeting cursor is on Kalou. If you can keep the cursor on Kalou until the gauge fills up completely, Phelps fires a warning shot—and the suspect immediately skids to a halt and surrenders.
From the alley Kalou cuts through a restaurant, runs across Hill Street, and sprints through the park 
. If you can’t get close enough to tackle him or target him with a warning shot in the park, Kalou continues down a lower-level drive-through that runs from Olive to Grand. Here you should be able to target him long enough to fill up the gauge and fire a warning shot, allowing you to apprehend him. If all else fails, a multi-car pileup halts Kalou and lets you apprehend him there.
Location: Wilshire Police Station
Now the scene shifts to the Wilshire Division precinct station. A long cinematic plays. Captain Donelly gives Phelps the opportunity to interrogate the suspect. Donelly explains what you need for a conviction: “A motive, opportunity, hard evidence, and best of all, a confession”. This gives you a new onscreen objective: “Obtain a Murder Conviction”.
Interview: Edgar Kalou
The opening topic on your notebook’s Questions page depends on whether or not you got a complete statement from Clovis Galletta.
Topic: Argument with Gage
This is your starter topic if you got “Suspect positively identified” from Clovis Galletta. Here Phelps lays out the simple facts as reported by the shoe store clerk. Kalou admits his disdain for Gage, but claims he had nothing to do with the shooting. (Note: If you failed to get a statement from Miss Galletta, this topic is replaced by “shooting incident”.)

When Phelps brings up Miss Galletta’s statement, Kalou loses his temper and begins to show his true colors. He rages at Gage’s anti-Semitism and is on the verge of losing control. Phelps knows to keep pushing Kalou’s hot buttons and does so in the next topic, “Possible religious motives”.
Topic: Shooting incident
This is your starter topic if you failed to get a statement from Clovis Galletta, but paid a visit to Eagleson’s Gun Store to trace the murder weapon. After accusing Kalou of lying, present him with the evidence you collected from your discussion with Fickman at Eagleson’s Gun Store. The murder was committed with Kalou’s weapon. His response adds another topic to your Questions list.
Correct Assessment: Accuse

Topic: Possible religious motive
After Phelps sees Kalou’s reaction, he presses hard on the bigotry angle, trying to force Kalou to crack. When Phelps reiterates that Gage hated Jews (learned from Miss Galletta’s statement), Kalou suddenly tries to clam up, saying, “I don’t know what you’re talking about”. Then he smirks, rolls his eyes, and tries to act nonchalant.
Correct Assessment: Bad Cop
Phelps keeps up the pressure. Kalou cannot contain his anger now, and the truth spews out. Phelps pushes Kalou to admit that he despised Gage, whose bigotry carried over to business dealings. This gives you the last piece you need for a conviction: a powerful motive. And with that, Phelps makes his accusation… and Kalou is a broken man.
Afterwards, watch as a very pleased Captain Donelly congratulates Officer Phelps and hints at a promotion in the works. As he puts it, “The department needs heroes”.
