This case opens in the Mirror Press Diner, a regular cop hangout just down Broadway from the Central Police Station. Detective Phelps arrives there for a breakfast meeting with his partner Rusty Galloway and Captain Donelly. The captain puts the pair on a new case: another young woman, this one Hispanic, murdered and left naked in an alleyway near City Hall.
Phelps can’t help but comment on the similarity to the Henry and Moller cases. Galloway points out that his partner isn’t convinced of Mendez’s guilt in the Henry murder. But Donelly will have none of it, and expresses his happiness with the case built in the Moller murder, as well—the DA is on solid ground with the evidence, he believes.

From the diner 
, travel to the crime scene 
. Approach the coroner, who says the cause of death is apparent. He waited for the detective team to arrive, so go ahead and examine the body.
Examine the body.
Start with the head. Phelps points out the great force indicated by the deep lacerations on the victim’s neck. Examine her torso to find a lipstick message, another familiar touch. This one says: “Kiss the Blood, B.D”.
Examine the victim’s left arm to see the marks of another wedding ring torn violently from the victim’s finger. Then examine her right hand to take the torn library card placed in her fingers—more grisly staging by the killer. It tells you her first name was Antonia and she was only 21 years old.
Afterward, the four discuss the similarities to previous murders, including the Black Dahlia killing. Carruthers adds another similarity: bruising from a stomp attack by a small size of men’s shoe. Pinker points out that the lipstick seems to be a similar color to the other cases.
Search the rest of the crime scene.
Examine the Bloodied Stocking on the ground next to the body, at evidence marker A. Note also the smeared Blood Trail leading away from the body. Follow it over to a blue cloche Ladies Hat on the ground near the blood-spattered door; it has the name Antonia written in the band.
The blood trail continues up the alley, past the squad car. Follow it to the trashcan near the blood smear on the wall, and find the bloody ladies shoe inside, no doubt one of the victim’s Personal Effects.
Keep following the blood trail to the water pipe and find the Key dangling from a string. It’s an apartment key etched with the number 5.
Again, follow the blood trail. Next, it leads you to a folded piece of paper on the ground. Examining this unfolds it to reveal an odd Dot Pattern Note that shows dice pips for 2, 5, and 3. Phelps suggests that it must be some sort of code or cipher. It seems the killer left a deliberate trail for you to follow.
The next blood smear is on the wall next to a fire escape ladder—your partner, Galloway, gazes up at the roof where it leads, providing a hint for where to go next. Approach and examine the bloodsmear for a short cut-scene: you look up the fire escape as Phelps says, “Where are you taking us?” Climb the fire escape to the roof.
The blood trail continues on the roof. Follow it into the pigeon coop to find an envelope with the name “Mrs. A. Maldonado” on the front. It’s empty, and Phelps wonders where these odd clues are taking him.
Follow the blood smears again until you find an enameled and gold-plated makeup compact about halfway across the roof. Examine it to open it. Then continue along the grim, bloody trail to the pipe that runs up the wall. Climb it to the next rooftop.
Follow the blood to the box-like airshaft to find another item hanging from a string: Antonia Maldonado’s wedding ring, torn from her finger. Phelps wonders: what’s the significance?
Hop up to the next level of roof for the grisliest find so far: a bucket of what appears to be Antonia’s blood and a blood-soaked paintbrush. Pick up the brush and examine it for a close-up. It appears that the killer used this brush to paint the Blood Trail (updates the existing clue) you’ve been following.
Follow the trail to the corner of the roof and pick up the victim’s handbag. Open it and examine the second half of the torn Library Card. This verifies the victim’s full name as Antonia Maldonado. It also gives you her address, which is added to your locations page. This wraps up your crime scene investigation.

Location: Antonia’s Boarding House
Search Antonia’s room.
Travel to Antonia Maldonado’s residence 
, a boarding house. Approach the front door to trigger a quick cut-scene: Phelps knocks and Mrs. Barbara Lapenti, the owner, answers the door. After the meeting, follow Mrs. Lapenti into her parlor to trigger another cut-scene. Detective Phelps reports the murder to the landlady and asks to search Antonia’s room. Mrs. Lapenti directs the detectives upstairs.
Climb the steps and turn left, then approach Room 5 on the left side of the hall. Enter the room to find it’s been broken into and ransacked. Turn right and examine the Broken Window to find an Iron Picket lying on the balcony outside the window. When you finish, Phelps automatically crawls through the window onto the balcony. Pick up the picket and examine it closely. Phelps wonders where it came from.
Crawl back into the room and search the dresser. Examine the framed Charm Bracelet Photograph (it’s turned face down)—you get a close-up of the bracelet on Antonia’s wrist. Phelps notes that the bracelet wasn’t among the crime scene evidence.
Examine the suitcase on the bed to find an envelope addressed to “Mrs. Maldonado”. Examine it further to open it; scroll down the Attorney’s Letter to learn that Antonia had filed for divorce from her husband, Angel. The letter provides Angel’s address and gives you a new objective.

Head back downstairs to the parlor and approach the landlady to trigger an interview sequence.

Interview: Barbara Lapenti
Topic: Possible suspects
When Phelps asks who might have wanted to hurt Antonia Maldonado, Mrs. Lapenti vehemently replies, “That rat of a husband, Angel”. She mentions the divorce papers as a possible motive and gives the detectives a straight-in-the-eye, no-nonsense look.

Mrs. Lapenti claims that Angel was a cruel husband to Antonia, who was a good girl, if a little on the religious side.

Phelps asks when Antonia left and where she was going the previous day. Mrs. Lapenti gives her time of departure, but claims no knowledge of the young woman’s destination. Her slight grimace suggests that she’s not telling everything.

Phelps senses a cover-up and presses hard. The landlady admits that Antonia went to the El Dorado Bar, noting that she’d been drinking a lot lately. (This adds a new entry to your locations page.) Galloway notes that it’s near where the body was found.

When Phelps asks about the break-in, Mrs. Lapenti tries to deny it. Of course, you have incontrovertible evidence.

When Phelps points out that Antonia still wore her wedding ring, Mrs. Lapenti notes that she also wore a Religious Necklace but no other jewelry. Her facial twitching and the wedding photo you saw suggest this isn’t true.

Arrest Angel Maldonado.
Travel to the Maldonado residence 
and examine the mailboxes on the right-hand side of the entry to find the apartment number, 304. Enter the building and climb the stairs to the third floor to trigger a cut-scene. Galloway kicks in the door of 304 and places Angel Maldonado under arrest.
But as soon as the detectives tuck away their guns, Angel’s brother, Hipolito, takes out Galloway with a flying tackle. When you regain control, you’re faced off against Hipolito while your partner battles Angel. After you K.O. Angel’s brother, go help Galloway if he needs it.
Once both brothers are cuffed and Galloway has called for a prowl car for backup, Phelps breaks the news about Antonia’s murder to Angel. He seems honestly shocked. After the uniformed cops haul off the brothers, start searching the apartment.
Search the apartment.
Enter the kitchen to examine the Bloodied Shirt hanging on a laundry line. Be sure to take a closer look at the bloodstains. Examine the fruit crate on the floor to get a new location, the Just Picked Fruit Market in Chinatown. Open the crate to find liquor inside.
You can also find a matchbook from the El Dorado bar on the counter. (This gives you the address if you don’t already have it.) Now listen to Galloway’s suggestion to check with the neighbors about Angel’s movements the previous night.
Canvass the neighbors.
Exit the apartment and start knocking on doors. The man in 305 answers, but he works nights, so he’s not very helpful. However, the woman in 302, Miss Aranda, heard the Maldonados fighting last night. She reports that Antonia lit out with Angel following her. Neither returned. This gives you information regarding the Husband’s Alibi.
After this conversation, Galloway suggests investigating the El Dorado Bar next. But when you get in the car, you receive a KGPL call. Captain Donelly and Detective Sergeant Finis Brown urgently request your presence downtown—there’s a new letter from the Black Dahlia killer. Better get back to the station right away.

Travel back to Central Station 
. When you enter, the Watch Commander calls out that the captain’s waiting for you downstairs. Turn right, then take the first left and follow the hallway to the stairs that lead down to Technical Services. (If you get lost, just follow Galloway.) Captain Donelly is waiting for you with Ray Pinker and Finis Brown.
The Black Dahlia killer appears to have left two items to be found: a note made of letters cut from newspapers, and a poem by Percy Shelley—an excerpt from his four-act play, Prometheus Unbound. Phelps explains the play’s premise and the team wonders about the excerpt’s meaning.

Go upstairs to Interview Room 2, where Angel Maldonado is waiting. He admits his wife was at his apartment the night she died, but then she left and he never saw her again.

When Phelps asks about his wife’s visit last night, Angel says she stopped by around midnight and didn’t stay long. But his extreme discomfort suggests some level of untruth, and you have evidence to share.

Phelps nails Angel with Miss Aranda’s statement that he went after Antonia and didn’t return. But Angel says his wife jumped into a Brown Ford Coupe at the corner; it was too dark to identify the driver.

Phelps asks if Antonia was wearing her religious medallion last night. Angel says yes, she always wore it. His steady look suggests he’s not lying.

When Phelps asks about the fighting and their impending breakup, a distressed Angel tries to deny that a divorce was in the works. You have plenty to refute this fantasy, however.

The attorney’s letter works as evidence of the Maldonado divorce proceedings, but if you visited the El Dorado Bar before conducting this interview, the “attorney’s letter” clue has been updated to “divorce papers”. Angel gives more detail about what happened in the apartment. When he finishes, Phelps elicits his shoe size, too: size eight.

When Phelps asks about the bloody shirt, Angel says he cut himself shaving—a lame explanation, and his face shows it.

Phelps threatens to have Angel charged if he doesn’t get more cooperative. The suspect changes his story; the blood is from a fight with his brother, Hipolito. Speak to the delivery man out back.
Exit the El Dorado via its back door to trigger a meeting with a man pushing a handcart. (On the way, you find the phone with an “Out of Order” sign on it.) He says he’s making deliveries to the bar from the Just Picked Fruit Market across the street. When Phelps mentions the Just Picked crate full of booze you just found, he denies knowledge of any such thing. Then he drives off in his delivery truck.

Travel to Just Picked Fruit 
and enter the market. Talk to the proprietor behind the counter—it’s the same fellow you just saw making deliveries to the El Dorado Bar. His name is Clem Feeney, and he reports that Antonia did come by the store last night. This triggers an interview sequence.

Phelps asks if the woman was wearing a necklace; Feeney claims he didn’t notice, and objects to the detective’s tone. However, he finds it hard to maintain eye contact after he reacts.

When Phelps wonders how much fruit anyone could sell after midnight, Feeney admits he sells booze on the side.

When the interview ends, Phelps asks to look around. Feeney isn’t too keen on the idea, but Galloway makes it clear that the grocer has no choice in the matter.
Search the fruit market.
Approach the nearby green double-doors; they’re locked, but Phelps kicks them open. This triggers a quick cut-scene. Phelps and Galloway discover a large cache of booze ready for shipment.
Approach the office desk on the left and examine the bloody Scalpel. Then move to the open file drawer next to the other desk in the room. Take out the wooden box; Phelps notes that it requires a combination. The three locks resemble dice—remember the dot pattern diagram you found at the crime scene? Enter that sequence on the box locks: 2, 5, 3.
Inside, you find the pieces of Antonia Maldonado’s charm bracelet… the one you saw on her wrist in the wedding photo in her boarding house room. (You can examine each charm individually if you want, but it’s not necessary.)
Once you’ve found both the scalpel and the charm bracelet, you get an urgent new objective and trigger a short cut-scene: Clem takes off running, hops into his green delivery truck, and speeds away!
Apprehend Clem Feeney.
Stay on the truck’s tail as Clem veers down alleys and cuts across pedestrian-filled walkways. Be careful not to run down civilians as you give pursuit. Once Clem’s truck gets out onto city streets, try to pull up beside him so Galloway can shoot out the tires. When you finally catch Clem, watch the case-closing scenes.
