After an unnecessarily violent and characteristically ridiculous struggle, Prince Laharl rose to succeed his father, the late King Krichevskoy, as the Overlord of the Netherworld. He did this by beating down anyone else who thought they had a claim to the throne, or who didn’t think his claim to the throne was valid, or who looked at him the wrong way. Really, there was a lot of beating down.
A few years later, after a couple of other-dimensional misadventures, Laharl is still the Overlord of the Netherworld ... or so he claims. Many demons still don’t recognize him, let alone acknowledge his rule. Worse, every would-be conqueror with an evil plan—from well-organized conspirators to suspiciously polite teenage angels to his own vassals—thinks they have what it takes to become the Netherworld’s new ruler.
Just in case that wasn’t enough, the Netherworld itself is in danger. A species of flower that’s native to the heavenly realm of Celestia has begun to sprout all over the dimension, transforming not only the local demons but the Netherworld itself. At the same time, angels are disappearing into the Netherworld, forcing the new Archangel to investigate.
Laharl’s got to prove he’s got what it takes to be the Overlord, avert an all-out war with Celestia, thwart the usual near-constant attempts to steal his throne, and finally, if it’s even possible, save the Netherworld itself.
