Immediately after jumping to the central platform, don’t move forward. Instead, spend some time inking as much of the platform as possible—Seekers are particularly helpful for spreading ink. Spreading your ink around makes it much easier to move about once the battle begins. This allows you to rapidly swim through your ink, making it easier to avoid the boss’s stomp attacks.
Round 1
When you’re ready to begin the battle, move forward to get the Octostomp’s attention. Immediately begin moving laterally in an effort to avoid the first stomp attack—the enemy leaps into the air, and lands face down on the platform. After the Octostomp lands, circle around to one of his sides and begin inking it, drawing a line of ink to his back. Once a path of ink has been created, swim up the side of the Octostomp and immediately open fire on the writhing tentacle on his back—damaging the tentacle is the key to defeating this boss. After damaging the tentacle on the Octostomp’s back, a geyser of purple ink erupts from his back—you escape automatically, landing on the platform. Prepare for round two!
Round 2
In the second round of the fight, the platform is immediately cleared of all ink. Use your main weapon and sub weapons to spread some ink while avoiding the Octostomp’s attacks. Continue using the same plan of attack, dodging his stomp attacks, followed by inking one of his sides while he’s face down. This time only portions of his sides can be inked, requiring you to swim up to his back following a zig-zag pattern. Once on his back, target the tentacle to trigger another geyser of purple ink.
Round 3
As the battle enters the third round, follow the same game plan—dodge the Octostomp’s attack, and ink one of his sides. However, this time his sides consist of inkable moving panels. These panels are easy enough to ink, but swimming up them can be challenging. Either wait until the panels are aligned, or make a zig-zag ascent to the Octostomp’s back. As usual, target the tentacle on his back to defeat the boss once and for all. After the Octostomp explodes, approach the epicenter of the detonation to collect several Power Eggs, a Sunken Scroll, and an Zapfish.

Now that you’ve defeated the Octostomp, Sheldon can use the recovered Sunken Scroll to create the Custom Splattershot Jr. Visit Ammo Knights, in the Plaza, to purchase this weapon for 800 gold—it can be used during ink battles.

Defeating the Octostomp during amiibo challenges unlocks new pieces of headgear. These items are automatically added to your inventory and can be equipped for use during ink battles.
