Place one of the three Splatoon amiibo figures on the GamePad to access new challenges and rewards.
Three new amiibo figures have been created to coincide with the release of Splatoon: Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy, and Inkling Squid. Interact with the empty amiibo box in the Plaza. Here you’re prompted to place one of the three amiibo figures on the GamePad—the corresponding amiibo appears within the box on screen. Each amiibo figure unlocks a variety of content including rewards like gold, weapons, gear, and arcade mini-games. But in order to earn these rewards, you must first complete specific challenges.
Challenges
Even if you’ve completed all the stages and boss fights in the single-player campaign, playing them again as each amiibo presents unique challenges and some cool rewards.
After placing an amiibo figure on the GamePad, that amiibo is unlocked in the game and can take part in a variety of challenges. The challenges consist of three stages and one Boss per zone, taken from the single-player campaign. Completing these stages earns you gold—see the provided table for reward breakdowns per stage. Defeating bosses unlocks other rewards, like unique weapons, clothing, shoes, headgear, and arcade mini-games. You must complete these stages and boss fights while playing as your character. But instead of using the standard-issue Hero Shot and single-player sub weapons, you must use the weapons associated with the unlocked amiibo. For example, the Inkling Boy must complete the stages and boss fights while using a roller weapon. This adds some variety to the single-player stages and boss fights, forcing you to approach them in a different way. See the following listings of each amiibo for details on how to unlock every reward.

The Inkling Girl is equipped with a charger weapon, requiring you to hold down the ZR button to completely charge it. The aiming reticle is surrounded by a ring-shaped gauge, showing the status of the weapon’s charge. When fully charged, the weapon emits a narrow, high-pressure stream of ink, ideal for long-range engagements. The weapon is less effective at spreading ink, so utilize multiple low-charge shots to spread ink around your feet while moving and swimming through stages.

|---|---|---|---|---|

Challenge Notes
When playing as the Inkling Boy, you’re equipped with a roller. This is a highly versatile weapon, but it takes some getting used to. While rolling across horizontal surfaces, the roller is great for spreading ink and rolling right over enemies. When it comes to spreading ink on vertical surfaces or hitting enemies above or below you, swing the roller to splat ink over a wide area. Or at close range, a well-timed swing can result in a lethal melee strike—hide in your ink, then jump out to whack enemies before they can retaliate.
Inkling Squid
Release Date:
- May 29, 2015
Description:
- In the game Splatoon, the main characters, Inklings, can instantly transform into squids! We’re not sure what marvel of anatomy allows them to perform this majestic feat, but it sure is sweet. In squid form, Inklings can swim in any surface they’ve splattered with ink, even up walls! They can also hide from opponents by submerging in ink and keeping still. How cool is that?
Weapon Unlock: Hero Shot Replica
Sub Weapon: Burst Bomb
Special: Bomb Rush
- Unlock Criteria: Obtain the weapon blueprint by defeating the Octomaw.
Arcade Game: Squid Beatz
- Unlock Criteria: Defeat the Octobot King.
Gear Rewards
| Gear | Name | Rarity | Main Ability | Criteria |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Power Mask | Defense Up | Defeat the Octostomp | ||
| Power Armor | Quick Respawn | Defeat the Octonozzle | ||
| Power Boots | Ink Saver (Main) | Defeat the Octowhirl |
Challenge Notes
The Inkling Squid is perhaps the most powerful Splatoon amiibo. By default, you play as a regular Inkling. But instead of turning into a squid when holding down the ZL button, you transform into an invincible Kraken. This is just like playing the Kraken special in
ink battles. If the Kraken seems overpowered, it’s because you’re tasked with clearing each stage within a specific amount of time or with limited ink. When playing a challenge with limited ink, avoid using sub weapons to keep your ink tank from being depleted.
