Nintendo Playing with Power eGuide The Legend of Zelda

Items

As Link continues his adventure, he obtains various items. Your effectiveness in advancing through the game depends on how well you use them. Read on for a complete list of all the items in the game.

Rupees

Rupees are the currency of Hyrule. When you collect them, you can buy items from merchants. There are yellow and blue Rupees. Yellow Rupees are the base denomination, worth one unit. One blue Rupee is equal to five yellow Rupees. You can hold up to a total of 255 Rupees; after that, picking up Rupees won’t have any effect on your wallet until you spend some of them.

Heart

Link’s health decreases when he is attacked. When you obtain a Heart, you recover one full Heart Container. In other words, this gives you more life. A Heart appears sometimes after destroying an enemy.

Heart Container

When you obtain this Heart Container, your total life capacity increases by one. You gain up to 16 Heart Containers during the course of the game.

If you hope to survive Ganon’s minions and the King of Evil himself, you’ll want as many Heart Containers as you can get your hands on.

Fairies

During the game, if Link defeats an enemy and rescues a Fairy from its devilish hands, she’ll thank him by refilling all his Heart Containers.

Life Potion

Drink this to refill all of Link’s Heart Containers. Second Potion turns to Life Potion after Link sips it. Drink the Life Potion and you’ll be fresh out of water!

Boomerangs

Use the Boomerang to stun enemies temporarily. There are two types of Boomerang: the Wooden Boomerang and the Magical Boomerang. The only difference between the two is that the Magical Boomerang can travel longer distances.

Bow and Arrows

The Bow, like the Boomerangs, can hit enemies at a distance. However, unlike the Boomerangs, the Bow destroys enemies at a distance with little effort. There are two types of Arrows for the Bow: Wooden Arrows and Silver Arrows. The Silver Arrows are stronger than their wooden counterparts. These will consume a single rupee for each arrow fired.

Bombs

Bombs do massive damage to any enemies their explosions hit. They also have the unique ability to blow apart weakened walls to reveal secrets. Whenever you pick up a Bomb item from a defeated enemy, your Bombs stock refills by four. Keep in mind that you only have eight Bombs at the start, so use them wisely!

Keys

Link needs these to open the locked doors in the Underworld labyrinths. The Magical Key, in particular, is very useful, because Link can use it over and over again. Other Keys are single-use.

Swords

Link’s survival depends not only on his courage, but his sword. Use this to damage most enemies. The White Sword deals double damage, and the Magical Sword will deal double that damage.

Candles

Link will need to acquire both of these candles throughout his travels in Hyrule if he is to uncover the secrets hidden throughout the land. The Candles will burn bushes in the Overworld to reveal hidden staircases and provide light within dark rooms in a dungeon or cave. The Blue Candle can only be used once per screen however so be careful!

Stepladder

You can cross a river or a hole with this item if it is no wider than Link. You can escape from bad situations by crossing rivers and holes, so keep that in mind after picking it up.

Raft

You encounter plenty of rivers, lakes, and the sea itself during your journeys in the Overworld. If you have the Raft, these bodies of water will be your playthings. There is a catch, however: the Raft only works if you set sail from a dock.

Recorder

The Recorder is a mysterious instrument said to hold magical powers. They say that those who master its secrets are able to control the waters and winds themselves.

Underworld Map and Compass

Link can uncover the entire layout of an Underworld labyrinth if he finds that labyrinth’s Map, located inside the labyrinth itself. If he finds a Compass, he can discover where the Triforce fragment is hidden within a specific labyrinth. Together, these items make Link the master of the Underworld.

Letter

When you choose this Letter at the Subscreen and press the B Button, Link can show the Letter to the Old Woman who lives inside one of the many caves in the Overworld.

Rings

The Blue Ring reduces enemy-inflicted damage by half, and the Red Ring reduces damage to one-quarter.

Power Bracelet

This bracelet grants Link amazing strength. With this Power Bracelet in hand, Link can push giant rocks and massive statues with little effort.

Magical Clock

The Magical Clock sometimes appears after defeating an enemy. Pick it up to freeze all enemies on the screen in place.

Food

Link can use this bait to lure an enemy to an area and then attack while the enemy eats it. Use this item with care! It doesn’t work on every enemy.

Magical Rod and Book of Magic

This is the wand the Wizzrobe uses. Wave it to let loose magic spells. What’s more, if Link picks up the Book of Magic and learns some new spells, he can chant to send out flames!
